Yep.  Did it.  This was supposed to be a salmon trip.  Randy and Mooch will  post the pictures later.

Mooch, Randy, Fuzzy Tom and I launched out of Lover's Point about 7am.  Spent 3 hours working hard to look for non-existent bait and salmon out in 240-260 feet of water.  Working hard because the wind and swell had us "drifting" 1.3 miles per hour out to sea.  When that produced nothing, we headed in for plan B.......look for halibut off Otter Cove.

At this point, the wind was way down and it was veritably pleasant out.  After Randy and Mooch hooked multiple lings over clear sand, Tom and I moved further east.  On my second drop after clearing the structure off of Coral St I got the tap...tap....slow run.....load and then yak ride...........what a kick!

With the lings that the guys had been catching, I had guessed at first that I had a big ling, but when I felt that heavy undulation I first dared to yell that maybe it was a halibut.  After multiple runs I got it to the side of my yak only to find that my net wouldn't contain it.  So I quickly replaced my old net with a new one and on the 5th or so attempt I had it nestled in the net on my deck!!!!  What a thrill!

Thank you Allen for preaching halibut hunting techniques.  I've been trying to apply them for three weeks now and finally converted it to the biggest fish I've caught from my yak.  Thirty six inches long and 22 pounds.

This beauty was taken on a standard halibut drifting rig with a 3 or 4 oz banana sinker (because we were out for salmon primarily) and anchovy at 55 feet.

My first halibut and the group's first salmon of the season (see the Savage's report).  For a day that started off rather snotty, it turned out pretty nice........... :smt004

Thank you all for the great company.  Salmon next weekend!!!!!!

Pat

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Good job Pat, can't wait to see the pics.

The past three months of not fishing haven't been too bad for me, but now that people are starting to do some real catching I'll need to figure out away of getting out again.
