Any one ever eat those big limpets you find on rocks? I just grilled them in their shell with ponzu and hot sauce thought they were good. Looking for more recipes heard them called the poor mans ab.

I like em... But for members reading this, remember that the regs state you must take em by hand.  No knife or tools.  I'd hate for someone to get a ticket over a limpet.  ;)

Kirk always told me you can take with "hook and line" (ie massive hook with some strong tired to it)..

So you just eat the whole thing right out of the shell? I see some big ones every now and then...

Yeah I just ate them whole cooked them real quick so they didnt become rubbery. Its a good snack/appetizer or with enough you could make a meal or add to pasta is my guess.

Guys, I'm not joking when I say you can use hook and line. Its in the regs and Kirk has discussed it with at least one warden. You can use a big ass shark hook or even a tuna double hook as a crowbar. Just have a little line connected to it.

I almost always take limpets when I'm poke poling SMC. The lower the tide, the more you'll find. A good place to check is along the sides of sea facing walls. I often find ones 3 inches in diameter, almost like little abalone!

And Sharky is spot on with the hook and line reg. Limpets fall under the mollusk section of the regs, which are fairly vague (except for abs, as we all know). It says in general, mollusks may only be taken by hand or hook and line. But it doesn't specify angling (or the limpet would have to voluntarily take the hook), so you can just use a big hook with a length of line as a pry tool.

Do you cook them like abs? How do you prefer them?

Oops, forgot to add that. Yes, I generally treat them how i would abs. I usually pop em' out of the shell, remove the gut sack shave the yellow foot off, dip them in soy/wasabi, and eat them as sashimi.

Or I'll do the same preparation, and dip them in some fish fry powder, and fry them very quickly (10-15 seconds at the most). Very good snacks.

Sometimes I find keyhole limits while diving in Monterey, which are bigger and meatier, but I haven't been able to take any because of the MLPA's. I found a ton of them down in Palos Verdes, too, which I was able to take. Sea cucumbers, too, which fry up nicely.

Here's a pic of a few that Spinal Tap & I harvested earlier this year.   :smt001

Ate them mostly raw, just scraped poop sack off, quick brine rinse, & dipped in chili/soy.  ;)
