I've been wanting to launch from this location for a while: south of Pescadero creek and why 1. This morning the conditions were great and I hit the water around 10 am. There are 20+ steps from the road to the beach ... Very doable when you go in, but a little work on the way back.

I'm trying to improve my skills and I used this experience as a benchmark. The launch was pretty easy and after navigating through the waves, 1/2 mile from the beach I started to fish. This was my first "open ocean" launch and I was watching the weather conditions like a hawk.

At 42 feet, I started gigging and very quickly I cut 2 nice rockfish ... but in despite all my planning I got hit very hard with the sea sickness. Meanwhile the wind and swell were becoming increasingly noticeable. I didn't want to take ANY risk and over estimate my abilities,  so quickly got back to the shore without any problem.

What I gather from this experience is that launching is easier than coming back ... at least with my Hobby Outback today.

Finally, on my way back I noticed few party boat not really far from the shore!

I'll try to find more of this type of opportunities to learn launching and navigating the ocean AND it seems I have to look for very calm waters and effective pils.

Cheers,
C-

Thanks for the report. The pill form of Scopace works great for me but you do need a prescription to get them. The non-drousy Drammamine also works but I still get hella sleepy with it. jim

Well done - keep on trying and dialing in your method.  You'll get it.   :smt001

The more you fish in the ocean the less motion sickness you'll get.  Thanks for the report Charam.

An old timer at the local bait shop told me Meszine or something that sounds like that is the  only thing that works for him.

Meclizine....It's powerful stuff so usually have to ask the pharmicist, but it's available over-the-counter.

Good luck!  And, in the future, try to get someone to go out with you on those wild coast launches.  Better to be safe than sorry.........

nice report and good fish!

i have never launched from there but have seen boats not far off the beach.

the party boats swarm in shallow waters off SM coastline often. places like bean hollow and shallow off HMB is pretty common.

Since you are launching at Pescadero i would think you would also enjoy:

pigeon pt

bean hollow

as well.

do you use a gps? marking spots? if so mark the places you hook up and repeat the drifts for more fish.

enjoy!

zelda, Your eagerness to get out on the blue is a goodthing. I would like to give you 2 tips that may save our life in the future:
~~Do not go out on the ocean alone, until you've logged in some     serious on-the-water time. Find a buddy.
~~Do not go out to Bean Hollow until:
     see above

Since you are launching at Pescadero i would think you would also enjoy:
bean hollow as well.
enjoy!

I'd opt for bean hollow unless the surf is really light.  The launch/landing at pescadero has lots of boulders in the surf.  That breaks up small surf and makes it fairly easy, but larger surf could kill you on the rocks.  Bean hollow is maybe more likely to upend you, but it's a nice sand beach, which is less likely to cause serious injury.

Except that Bean is associated with other non-geologic risk factors that are likely to cause serious injury

Since you are advising someone to go out alone to BeanHollow:
Dont forget about warning/alerting him of the higher percentage factor of being attacked by a GWS there. That could kill you before you land on the nice sand beach.

You guys are 2 great advisors...... :smt012  i dont think i've ever seen a either of you there in the last 3 seasons, why would you send a newbie there?

I'll say the best advice comes from SCAllen: Get someone to paddle with you. Don't fish solo up there, and try to be prepared. In fact, don't even paddle solo, keep tight to your group. You'll still catch fish, and multiple boats gathered may ward off inquisitive sharks. Maybe.

it was a perfect day yesterday, and there were paddlers all over the area of PP. I would not recommend it as a place to learn kayakfishing, but as a serious, dangerous place to paddle. If $ allows, maybe purchase a shark shield.

I was just pointing out that I felt Bean Hollow is safer due to the lack of rocks in the surf.  I doubt the sharkiness is different because they're so close together.

Neither launch is good for taking my kids out in a kayak, but my older son (7) did catch several rockfish in the general vicinity the other weekend on a PB.   :smt006
