Dang, that's a swordfish! :smt003

Seeing that thing so close had me a little scared, and at the same time thinking how I'd sneak it to Art's car...after I shoot it with his gun.

Angel, you shoulda took a shot and let the chips fall where they may.  As close as it got to you, a "self-defense" argument would totally be feasible.   Because you didn't, I think your new name should be "Cherub".   :smt044

Shared the video with a local Marine Biologist I correspond with and this was his response:

That's about the coolest thing ever...! It didn't look like it was feeling too good, but hard to tell from a quick video. Truly amazing.
The only thing I can think of is that there is a lot of warm/cold water mixing lately. I was surfing in Aptos yesterday and there would be pockets of noticeably warm water every once in awhile and it wasn't me peeing in my suit. The warm water was real clear too and there was tons of bait right inshore. I could see anchovies or sardines jumping out of the water and the birds were going nuts. Then came the dolphins.
On the Monterey side of the bay, I surfed Carmel Beach before work on Friday and the dolphins were in close there too. I've never seen dolphins in the lineup there....just further out in Carmel Bay. Maybe some connection???
We dove on Thursday last week out on the shale beds off Delmonte and it was pretty cold (51 F) and vis was about 10 feet at best. Maybe all this warm/cold good vis/bad vis mixing has something to do with it.
Other than that, I don't know....Thanks for sending all the good footage.

Sincerely,

Jim

Driving to the spot I looked out in the beds at a tandem kayak with two people just sitting in it...then about 15 feet away there were dolphins breezing through, spotted em about 3 or 4 times before we got too far away to see em again.  There's been an algae bloom at the spot as of yesterday.  I didn't notice any difference in the water temp though, I don't realy recall feeling the sting on the face as it numbs you up....then again I wasn't really paying attention.

As far as self defense goes....I told cherub we can probably take it if I swam down and grabbed it by the bill then wrapped a figure four around its torso to control its body, meanwhile he woulda take out its gills.  The general consensus was that applying the figure four woulda been difficult with fins on so we refrained  :smt012

That point thing would have made a great handle for a triangle leg choke lol.  you didn't get an actual water temp reading?

I'm just imagining what would have happened if someone fishing for salmon, WSB, or rockfish in Monterey Bay hooked and landed that beast.... especially from a kayak.  That would have been a news worthy story fo' sure!

Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

So unbeliveable...     way to f'ng  go.     Thing looked like sharky took a bite off it's tail.     Could it be a Marlin ???

Water temp a mile off Capitola was 63 - 64 degrees on Saturday.   Wouldn't be surprised to see some Mola Mola around soon.
Sometimes the fish isn't the only prize.

Wow...once in a life time indeed :smt001... a good thing you did not provoke him... there was a report down in Dana Point years ago where a marlin, not a sword, got pissed off and speared a small fishing vessel going right through the fiberglass. Came lose and tried again... maybe he was just release from Lacy looking for love in all the wrong places. :smt013
