A little heads up, SWS,Spanish Bay beaches are posted as health hazards,High levels of bacteria found in samples taken on Tuesday. The beaches will be posted until new tests indicate water is safe for swimming or wading. :smt009
It was in this mornings Monterey Herald.
I went out yesterday not knowing any of this and had a great time out there.
I got 1 underling,1 legal ling, my PB Cabbie, HUGE weight wise, 4 Olives over 20" 1 Vermillion,1 treefish, released and a couple brown rock cod. Parking was no problem but this weekend will be a mess with the golf tournament going on right there. :smt044

The reds are definitely a bonus fish out there! Thanks for the report.
I wonder if the runoff from the golf course has anything with the negative water report?

A couple of months ago, the SC Sentinel paper had an article about the poor water quality at Cowell's Beach in SC.  I'd always wondered why it was so bad there, and whether it was unsafe to be in the water further out in the cove (Though I'm pretty sure it is unsafe after the first big rains).  The story said that most of the pollution was from rotting seaweed, and that the reading is taken right at the west side of the wharf (in the winter, water from an inland lagoon empties there, so I could understand why there would be high poo levels at that time of the year), but the story said that the pollution level at the stairs around past the Dream Inn to the West was nowhere near as high as at the wharf.
Stillwater, I suspect, suffers from the same rotting seaweed, no current to mix it out problem , and you can often see how murky the water is for some distance out, then it is clear as can be.  An arm of the Monterey deep canyon goes into Carmel Bay, and can't be more than a mile or so from Pescadero Pt., so I doubt that the water is seriously polluted in that area.
At least in Santa Cruz, the water samplers are volunteers -so who knows what their agendas might be?

I swam cowell's saturday AM and now have a very mild sinus infection.  No warning (other than the general "is a dirty beach" warning).  In fact, I asked one of the lifeguards in the HQ on the wharf about bacteria and he said not to worry LOL

Probably just coincidental illness.

I was there Monday and actually saw the sample being taken right by the pier below the steps just a couple of feet from the freshwater.  Talked to the guy and he said that Stillwater always has higher counts because of the still water.  Did not get into much else because we were offloading and couldn't remain there.
