I am headed to Rancho Leonero next month. It is past time for changing out the line on my reels. Trying to decide between fluorocarbon and braided. What would you pick?

I use braid (spectra) as the backing and tie a topshot of flouro for picky fish, or mono if they are not line shy.
Braid lasts many seasons and mono needs to be changed out seasonally or sooner depending on use.

For RF's fishing especially around kelps, braid is a much better choice!

Only recently have I begun to use braid. The first thing that I discovered was: If I'm going to continue to use 'lighter line braid,' for stripers, I had to move away from fast action graphite rods. The combination of 'no stretch' with the braid and the fast action graphite created a very narrow margin of error. I found a sweet old graphite medium action rod -ha- and it suits the braid and circle hooks, really well.

Second: It serves as my 'small' topwater rod: the delay created by the 'soft'/slow bend when setting on a fish, helps from pulling a lure out of a fish's mouth, but, once the point of the hook touches a lip, it's straight to barb.  Solves my bad habit anyway.

For cod, although I haven't used it yet, when fishing hardware, I can't see why I'd use mono; too many advantages.
Salmon, braid scares me; too soft of a mouth, but I haven't done it, so what do I know?

I really like braid, thus far. However, no one told me that it gets tangled in ways that seem to defy the laws of "what's possible." I'm regularly amazed at how braid finds its way into places and how often a seemingly small problem can't be solved without surgery.

It also gets wind knots, had a few, one or two cost me a lure or two.

I'd say: If a person is open to being a little uncomfortable with their 'craft,' and not to set on how 'things are supposed to feel' and willing to make a couple of mistakes that she/he might not otherwise make, which may, or may not cause a fish to swim away free, then, under most conditions, Go for it. You can feel fish pass gas.

Depends.  What reel are you putting it on?  I use braid when fishing down there primarily for line capacity.  I do like to run long 30-50 yard topshots.  Braid is too visible in the clear waters that I don't want it anywhere near my lure/bait.  On reels that I can pack 300 yards of mono on, I don't use braid.  This is for 30# outfits.  For the bigger guns (fishing for bigger fish!), I like 500 yards of capacity.
