Agree w/ Calcutta being bullet proof. :smt045   I don't have 400B but have pretty old 50xt & 200xt.  I took them in for service once every other year or so (I cannot put any reels back together by myself... :smt012  salvaged bunch of spinning reels in past :smt009) and still work like champ.  Very smooth strong good casting reels (even though I suck at casting on casting reels, Moochie knows).  use 200xt for stripers in Delta & works great!

In the other hand, I do love my Avet sx5.1. :smt007  Small & light enough that I can jig all day long but strong enough to bring lingzilla home.  the lever drag gives me fast & accurate drag response!   And also I really like the clicker & lever drag when I am bait fishing w/ soft-bite fish like halibut or sturgeon.  I can adjust the lever drag just light enough to hold the 3-7oz weight in place but same time I can let the fish run without them feeling the drag (like open spool).  Kinda hard to explain here but maybe somebody else can chime in for me...

For more oomph, you might look into the Abu 7000i. Really nice reel for the price, tons of line capacity, comes with a power handle, clicker, levelwind.  Really good value  :smt002
I had an Abu 7000i C3 just too heavy for jigging all day long for me (I do one hand jigging & one hand paddling) so I gave it to ATD-Adam.  You can ask him how he likes it (if he used it at OC last weekend).

IMO: the Calcutta series are like Toyotas...they are built to last  :smt045

some very good advice in here, i think i am going to push forward with the calcutta...its been proven and i like the light maintenance.  Is there anything I should do to the calcutta before fishing with it (upgrades?)

also would it be ok to use with my trevala or is there another rod i should match it up with that would be better?

I have used all the reels mentioned above and they are all great reels for different reasons. The Avet is great for pulling on Tuna and Sturgeon but a little overkill for a bay Hali or any Rockfish. The Calcutta has a problem of burning the (weeker) Drag and also of having the A.R. bearing go out (usually with a little loose oil or grease). The Abu C3 series will probably handle most of what we catch in a yak but has less WOW factor than most and could use a drag upgrade.
The reel I have found to be the best option if you are looking to spend the money is the Daiwa Luna. It has a great drag, all aluminum construction, and has had great reviews.

Of course if you want to save a little $$$ I still recomend the ABU C3's as the most bang for the buck (just plan on a drag upgrade)

I agree with Eric on the Luna nice trouble free reel, but don't really think the SX is overkill pretty sweet little reel for $160 smooth drag but you will only get about 10lbs of drag out of it so if you are going to run 40/50lb braid get some thing else. I am really happy with my Dawia SL20

I do like Daiwa Gold series (I'm more Nissan or Honda guy then Toyota :smt003) & how about Okuma Andros http://www.okumafishingteam.com/family/395262
& how much cost to upgrade the drag on Abu C3 (I have back up 6600 C5 actually Ash's reel that needs the drag upgrade) or might be better to get the Record, Eric (sorry for the thread jack... :smt002)?

I have used 2 of the Calcutta 401 TE for about 10 years and I have not had one problem with them. I have to agree about the luna its a great reel. And the avet I have had it in my hands but have not ever used one. Just remember wash them off when your done.

I love my Avet SX's.  They just feel NICE!!!  I work them hard on the weeklong trips I run.  However, after a week straight of use (with little rinsing in the interim), I find I need to rebuild them due to salt buildup.  I don't have this problem with any other reels I run.  So yes, they do let water in more than other reels.

I have both, and while I am not knowledgeable about reels nor have much experience, i agree that they FEEL NICE. Smooth as butter and gives me confidence in the gear.  Plus, it looks sexy.

Peace, y'all

Last time when I got serviced on my Avet, the guy told me that I have to rinse open spool & dry close (or vice versa...?)   I don't remember...  I gotta go back & ask sometime. :smt009

I agree with Yakhooper with the Luna, that's my go to reel for almost all local saltwater fishing.  I own the more expensive Calcutta 400TE and still prefer the Luna 300.

After years of experimenting with different reels I like the level winds.  I have never had any problems, off course I clean and maintain my gear.

Ah, the Luna I do remember being a very sweet combo on a ML Trevala.  :smt002  Unfortunately mine is at the bottom of Shelter Cove  :smt005  Along with my MH Trevala and 401A Cardiff  :smt044

I own them all (Avet, Calcutta, Revo, Luna) and will say I prefer the Avet SX for the following reasons:

Lever drag
Non-level wind
Magnetic cast control
2 speed
Easy to service
