As most you all know my buddy Miguel, my Dad and I have been training for the Mayor's Marathon in Alaska and raising $$ for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Mooch and Shicken and in memory of those who have left us too soon because of Cancer or other f*ed up diseases.

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,28366.0.html

We raised well over $7,000 with the help and support of NCKA and family and friends, and the Santa Cruz Team we are on raised over $122,000 since we started training in January!!

Alaska was...AMAZING!!!!!  :smt007 :smt007

Beautiful place, great people, excellent food, yummy beer....really was a special trip!!

Miguel has been battling a foot injury so he was not his usual speedy self, but that allowed me to catch him around mile 13 and keep him going thorugh the pain...was very cool to run and finish with my good friend!!

They say a Marathon is 85% mental/heart and 15% physical ability...I think for Miguel it was about 95% heart that day...

I could see the pain in his face and in his stride as soon as I found him on the course...he told me he could not feel either of his feet and I just kept telling him we were gonna take it one mile at a time....after the gravel tank trail from mile 7-15 we popped back on paved road and even though it was less steep, our legs had taken a beating on the rough road...we cruised for a mile or two and then Miguel really starting hurting...

I told him it was gonna be all heart from mile 18 in, and if anybody had the heart to do it, it was him!!

The last few miles my wheels started to fall off and Miguel returned the favor and talked me out of my head and kept me going....

The big motivator for both of us was the people we were running in honor and memory of...just thinking of the names on the backs of our shirts made us able to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

We both finished together at 4 hours and 59 minutes...about 15 minutes slower than what I was hoping for (and way slower than Miguel's usual pace), but the course was challenging and we were both just happy to finish together and to help each other cross the finish line!!

My Dad has been in and out of the Hospital with heart problems these past few months so could not get the green light for the Full Marathon, but rocked the Half out in great time and got 5th in his age category!!

The party afterwards was off the hook and a great time was had by all!!

Here is the vid!!

THANK YOU once again to EVERYBODY who helped us achieve our fundraising and training goals!!  Really means a lot to me to have all your support!!

 :smt006

Sincerely,

Jim

ps...the medals are big and heavy and make great bottle openers!!  :smt002 :smt005 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
