I've always used cheap sunglasses, but I'm wondering are more expensive sunglasses worth it?  Are the more expensive ones better for your eyes?  Less fatigue?

Thanks,

My opinion,,,,,,you need to make sure that the ones you get have a 99-100% UV protection, after that it's just a matter of style, 1) this just makes sense, and 2) I confirmed it with my Dad's opthalmologist who is a macular degenation specialist.

My favorites are a pair of stylish wrap around Safety Glasses, smoke grey with 1.5 reading inserts, (like bi focals), 100% uv protection,

$10.

Well in regards to fishing, polarized makes it easier to see into the depths.  Expensive, I vote no as my $150 Costa Del Mar sunglasses are at the bottom of the Port of Sacramento.  I did some time on a light tackle charter boat in Key West and without some good polarized glasses you couldn't see bait on the flats or the Permit when target fishing.

real uv protection is a must- else you darken the view, which increases the size of your pupil, which lets more damaging rays in.

really cheap sunglasses don't actually have the protection you need.

Costa del Mar with bifocal (or knot tyn') lens.   :glasses1:  For Me worth the exta $$$. Improve vis, reduce glare, no more squinting when tyn knots, and no more HA after being on the water all day.  Luv Em. But more important is that my Grandson thinks I Look Cool wearing them.   Wear a chums type retainer strap.  Steveislost, bummer about yours, lost my first pair a few year back.  Sucked watchn a "C note/plus" flutter into the abyss.

I've had great luck with Native sunglasses from REI. They have really nice polarized lenses and don't totally break the bank. The pair I like costs $85.

They also have a killer warranty and I think I'm on my third or fourth pair now over the last 5 years or so. I work constructions so my sunglasses get really beat up at work.

I have lost a pair after capsizing a dingy in the sf bay but not off the yak.... yet.
A big sun hat helps a lot as well.

You should definitely invest in a good pair of glasses. Like Danglin said it's your only pair of eyes.

Strictly speaking to UV protection the idea that you have to spend allot to get even the best rated UV protection is BULLSHIT.

Do your research, know what you're buying,

If you WANT to spend allot on sunglasses that's OK with me but don't fool yourself into thinking you NEED to spend allot to get the protection you need.

Also found this:

"Polarized lenses. Polarized lenses reduce glare. Unless they're specifically treated with UV coating, polarized lenses don't offer UV protection."

Aside from polarised lenses, Keep in mind that quality of the lens-build is also a factor.  The quality in shaping the lens impacts what/how you see.

B/c I too have lost too many pairs of $150+ shades, I now go "middle of the road" @ $50-100.  That way, I figure I'm getting polarized lens that have good lens-build quality.

I've lost some expensive sunglasses in the past. Bought a pair of Berkeley polarized fishing glasses for 10 bucks at Walmart. Somehow, I never manage to lose those.  Works great, and I haven't gone blind from over exposure to dangerous UV light...

Being in the eye business for many years, I don't ever go cheap on sunglasses just because you only have a pair all your life. I'm not saying break the bank but
get a well know manufacturer rather than the flea market ones. I wear Oakleys
because the smoke grey is soothing to my eyes.
