I got my kayak in April and haven't even attemped to catch a 'butt on it. My last pier halibut came on a 1/4 oz. darter jighead with a 5" Gulp Jerkbait (anchovy color). The fish hit it one time and let go before I could load up. I threw right back to the same spot and the 23" incher swallowed it. Nothing but 20lb. braid sticking out it's mouth. I'm thinking about trying plastics on a dropshot for kayak fishing.

I only know of one person who has released a hali and it was cuz of a mixup between butt/ling regulations. Just curious to find out if anyone here practices hali cnr?

Salmon eggs. Green label. Yet to be effective though.

When using a trap rig, make sure to insert one prong of the trailing treble directly but gently into the shiner's anus. Some shiners really like it; others just get extra squirrelly because of it.

Halibut don't do well with catch and release. Studies have shown that even mouth hooked fish that were handled gently often die anyways from infection.

That's why I like to eat mine.  :smt001

Eric just doesn't want you to bring the fish to him for weigh in.  You can keep them if you want, but be sure to take a picture of it for your entry.

Good luck in trying to take a picture of a 30+ inch Hali on the hawg trough in a kayak  :smt003

Sorry Eric, I would like clarification. Photo with CLOSED mouth? It makes a BIG difference with hali.
If it is CLOSED mouth will this rule be strictly enforced?

+1.
The ONLY way a hali will survive is if you shake it WITHOUT netting it. Once you net our pull out onto your lap, it's a dead fish 95%+ of the time. It DOES NOT matter if you have a fancy rubber net, handle it gently or use circle hooks.
If you put it on a trough to photo, it's DEAD.
This has been studied in depth.
Leargn what a 22" hali looks like and shake em without boating em. Keep the keepers.

Just for clarification,
This is a Catch-Photo-Release/Keep compitition.
After you get a photo of your catch you have the option to either keep or release.
I will not measure your fish so I only want a photo at the check in.
The photo will need to clearly show the total length of the catch and should have the mouth closed for a accurate measure.
This will have to be enforced to assure fairness to all.
All angling methods and rules deemed legal by the State of California and the Dept. of Fish & Game are exceptable anything else will result in Disqualification and poss. action by the appropriate authorities.
Hope this clears any questions.

See Ya There,
Eric / Yakhopper

Yeah thanks Eric! I think the DFG was at the ramp last year and when they measure a fish on their trough they completely shove the fish up tight and mouth closed all the way for their measure.

The winning Hali last year was on a large herring that I cut the head off of, so that it would be a small bait!  I just wanted to catch something :smt044

My secret trick is this. As the day wears on and ambient noise on the bay increases, I steadily fill my tank well up with increasing numbers of empty beer cans rolling around. I sim for having 10 to 12 back there by noon. This is a sonic attractant. I swear by this method.
