a lot of those items apply to a wetsuit too.
you can wear rainpants and paddle jacket over a wetsuit.
ultimately people swim in wetsuits they don't swim in waders. they wade.
So I'm sure they work just great but ultimately I really doubt they are as safe.
The bottom-line..... If someone wanted to stay dry but was strill concerned about safety, they could wear a thin farmer john wetsuit under a pair of breathable waders.

For me, it would beat wearing rain pants over a wetsuit where your feet would still be wet and cold in booties.... especially if it's windy.

hey jmairey

no really, what about floatation foam in your waders? you could slip them on and once you're on the yak spray the foam inside

just be sure to leave a hole for your pool noodle

Hey Blue... you may actually have an idea there.  Aren't ocean survival suits (like those used on offshore oil rigs and arctic fishing boats) designed with foam for floatation and protection from hypothermia?

That's funny :smt005 but seriously isn't that what neoprene waders are?

Exactly, Mike!
I sometimes like to wear my neoprene waders for that reason.  Heck... my damn neo waders fit so tight... there's no way water is going fill them up even without a belt.

Mike, I have the Cabela's® Dry-Plus Premium Stockingfoot Waist-high Waders for around $99.  They're easy to put on and great when you need to pee.  I've been using them since October and they've been holding up perfectly.

.... but I also wish I had a pair of more versatile chest waders.  They start around $70 at Cabelas.

I have been wearing the same waist highs...two thumbs up.  I will still always wear a wetsuit on the ocean however.

You still got your Hat?
The Dan Bailey's Breathable Waders I've been wearing--I've been wearing going on eight years , believe it or not. About six years ago when I started yakfishing ing the salt they sprang a leak. I told DB's about it and they were replaced no questions asked. The suspender's are designed so that you roll the top down to the waist.
Their  design is so that you can buckle them at the waist and presto waist high waders. One thing I learned quickly was when if you tighten your wading belt then set down in your yak. You'll puff up like the good year blimp.
So set down first and then tighten your belt. Although I've been kayaking for a few years the wet suit is a new thing to me and I've been using one for the last year or so. My main reason is to use them for underwater photography, a goal in the future. As far as launching in rough surf, I have, and dressed like I was mentioned previously, I did just fine and if I had to I could swim a reasonable distance. Bottom Line? A pair of quality breathable, stocking foot--waders. and a waterproof paddle jacket . are  the best paddlingsuite for a kayakfishermen. Your talking about an investment of maybe $300 if you choose wisely. Far cheaper than an actual
paddlingsuit. I think Bluekayak might actually agree with that. Also--sippers can be sewn in waders by a good canvas shop
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.

What other brands are out there?
All I can find locally is Hodgman waders(neo), are these the same style or do you have a good source to find them?

Hey Boxofrain, You can check out the waders at www.dan-bailey.com. other brands are simms, orvis. You'll probably find the best selection in a fly fishiing shop.

Hey Boxfrain - I use the hodgman neoprene waders (for Bay and lake yak fishing) = they'll defintely keep you warm and dry - just wash 'em down after every use so they don't stink. You can get them cheap at Sportsmart - and you'll even get a better deal when they go on sale.

jmairey has a good point about waders vs. a wetsuit. = if you do get separated from your yak, swmming in a wetsuit would seem easier - in my opinion at least. This would actually another good "myth-buster" test.

But I'm still with Jmairey and Sean - I'd rather wear a farmer john wetsuit over anything else....especially when your covering a lot of miles out in the open ocean.

Brain G. still has the best looking outfit when it comes to kayak fishing :smt003 He wears a red sweater on top of his wetsuit and he also wears his pearly white tennis shoes........he looks like a fitness instructor for Jenny Craig  :walk:   VERY CREATIVE BRIAN!!!! Must be a "Lodi" thing  :smt002
