Hey Everyone,

I was hanging out with Alan Tani and he wanted me to pass on that he has a reel for sale. It is highly recommended by him for saltwater kayak fishing because of how easy it is to maintain after ocean fishing or even dropping in the sand, partly because its easy to take apart, but also it has bushings instead of bearings which are less prone to corrosion. I bought a jigmaster 501 and had Alan hot rod it, and used it for the first time Sunday at SWS, its pretty nice! Here are some pics of mine, and also after use I unscrew one thumbscrew, take the spool out, and drop some reel oil in. Put it back together, and I'm done! Mine is the red one, the one for sale is the black one. Also, here is the link to the reel rebuild on his site:

The upgrades are:

Reel service by Alan
Upgraded larger pete kolekar handle
Stainless steel gear sleeve
Carbon fiber drag washers
300yds Yozuri Hybrid 30lb line

If anyone is interested, I can bring it up to GS5 on saturday.

Roger

That's a good reel for someone...the Jigmasters are sort of the AK47's of the fishing world. They're effective, stone reliable, millions made, and easy to service in the field. Not really smooth like more complex reels (bushings rather than bearings), but they won't let you down. And you get old school points for slaying the fish with them. One drawback: the tolerances between the spool and the sideplates are not very tight, which leaves room for the line to get into that gap, which can create nicks in your line as you extricate it. Because of this, you want to fish larger diameter mono with these, and stay away from the braid. You may find aftermarket spools which solve this issue, but I just call em good reels for 25 lb test and leave it at that.

Best,

Paul

Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.
