I had to work most of the weekend, but on Sunday we quit early.  Some of my crew are a bunch of young, overly enthusiastic spearos and they've been making fun of me for giving up on diving and fishing...........calling me gramps and shit..........making AARP jokes.....saying they don't want to have to do CPR on me anyhow.   So, screw them.  They got me to go out free diving with them for the first time in nearly a year.

Man, I forgot how much I love that.  We shot a bunch of rockfish, nothing special.  I got a limit of blacks and blues........and had a blast.  At one point, I was hanging over the school, pulling up my spear with a black on it and a big ling cod came out of nowhere and nearly swallowed it.  I pulled him right up to my face plate, while yelling over to my crew guys to come over here and shoot this thing.  They thought I really was having a heart attack  :smt044  Those assholes.  By the time they got over there the ling had decided that maybe this wasn't the best deal for him and spit the fish.  It was a nice one.

The only bad part of the afternoon was that I was diving in an area that will be part of the Cabrillo Point MPA.  One of my favorite spots........soon to be gone.

Oh yeah, nobody wanted to take any abalone........and it was very enjoyable.  No stupid cards that look like a toilet paper roll; no trying to fill out the stupid cards on the beach while you're dripping wet, and no having to clean abalone!!!  I think I'm over those things.

Congrats on getting out and finding some fish, Dave!

After hearing your and also Jim's ling stories, I think I'm going to keep a polespear nearby whenever I'm using my gun. Never know when that fat ling will follow you up to the surface.

Nice report you old fart. I know exactly what you mean about the snails. After like 400 abalone its just not that big of a deal. Good for you getting out with the guys. Lets go before I AM too old. Shit!
