Just wondering what most are using on their ocean reel and how often they replace it. I have been using 50lb braid and it looks fine but it has been 2 seasons so wondering if I should replace not. Thinking about jumping up to 80lb so I can maybe get those snags ripped out better.

WOW 80 lb?
I use 30 lb braid and haven't had a problem for 5yrs
When you snag the bottom just give slack than shake it.
With this method I can honestly say I rarley loose more than 1 jig per outing (never lost a jig in 2010).
Also with 30 lb I know I could break it free if I had to - not so sure with 80
Like anything on a yak - think of the worst case scenario:
Your spooled up with 80 and you snag bottom near a nice boiler rock and a heavy swell is headed your way.
Now remember even with a light leader - say 30 lb or even 20 you still have stretch to contend with befor you are safe. With 30 braid even with a heavy leader (I use 40) you still have the strength to pull your fish but you know in a tight situation you can always break the braid quickly.
I know many will have their own preferances but this has worked for me without fail and I highly recomend nothing heavier than 30 braid with a 2-1/2 foot leader of quality mono to help in the rocks.
Hope this helps.

What yakhopper said.

For safety's sake, 80# is far too heavy IMHO.
I used 30lb mono once on a swelly day & it was hairy getting off of snags. My go-to setups for jigging rockfish are a 30lb and 20lb braid, with a 10' leader of 30lb mono for easier knot tying/abrasion resistance/shock absorption. These have worked great for fishing in 20-130FOW.

I guess maybe I should start using a leader then. That might be the reason I break off occassionaly . I was thinking increase to 80 might stop this but it might just be I need to use some mono as a leader.
Thank

30LB Braid is still pretty hard to break off, so I use a 20-25lb Mono Topshot (10 or so ft).  The Mono is much easier to break off, and the braid lasts for a very long time, but the mono lasts 7-8 trips and is easily replaced.

I use 30 for swallow and 50 for deep water.    When casting, Braid sometimes gets wrapped around the rod tip, .  It can be a pain to untangle sitting on a kayak. 80 lb can easily snap your tip.

Yeah, my braid is 3yrs old & looks good, but I do trim off a bit each time I tie on a new leader/topshot.
Another thing i dig about the mono leader is that by running your finger over it you can spot abrasions immediately and trim & retie.

Light rig is 30lb  braid. Heavy rig is 50lb braid. both get a 30lb mono or flour leader. had it on for 3+ seasons!

Wow, I use 17lb leader and have never lost a fish to a break off.

Oh, and 30lb braid mainline.

30# braid, 25# mono leaders,

If you're using straight braid, rockfish and lings probably don't care, but once that braid rubs against a rock, it's a goner.
