Thanks everyone!!!

My pet peeve since I started free diving is.... when you go down with abalone gear, and you see a big fish, or you go down with a spear gun and see a big abalone.. UGH!!!!!

I almost want to make a spear gun ab iron.. LOL with built in guage...

hate that too...i seen a big as ling but my gun was with my diveboard hella far away. i went back but coudnt find it ;(

Easy solution.  Dive with a gun attached to a easy to see floatline (I use white) with no float (or very small and streamlined) on the end.  If you come across a big ab, leave the gun in a position that will identify the location of the fish easily ( I point the gun at where I saw it) and go back to get your iron and gauge.  Follow your line down and pop the ab.

Yep. Thats they way to do it.  Also, if you are comfortable, dive with your gun in one hand and with the other, hold your light as well as your 10" ab gauge. That way if you come across a large ab, you can instantly measure it. Without the gauge, you'd have to mark the ab, swim back to your board/kayak/and then back to the ab to measure, only to potentially find that it is shorter than you would like.

Chaeki,

Great report and video as always.  Those abs are nice.  Sorry you didn't get your 10 incher but I know you will get yours someday.
