so you have factoy mounts? one boat? if so, then bottom up. just lash it with cam straps. to be safe add a bow and stern line to the respective bumper.

I've seen people use pool noodles, foam blocks or the standard Thule/Yakima racks.
pool noodles are available at Walmart.  You can Google "kayak foam blocks" for many vendors.

It's a start.  I'm sure others will chime in.

I have an Escape with round tubes also. Single kayak, deck down with bow and stern lines.
Three kayaks, upright with a Yakima post thing (can't remember the name).

The pool noodles on the rack, any type work great. Really helps cinch it down tight. But used two straps across, no bow line, with it cinched on the noodles, its never moved, even on long road trips  On my to13 I always had the seat eyelets on the inside of the rear cross bar on the rack. Sorta locks it place from sliding back.

Sounds great. I felt pretty comfortable with the set up and there two of us watching to see if there was going to be any movement or not. Short trip and not all that speedy. Thanks for the advise  Chuck

One more tip that I learned from the OGs is to run the strap thru the scupper
holes and around the rack. This way the kayak doesn't slide forward or back specially if you don't have any pool noddles on the bars.
