Don't leave anything in or on your car/truck ANYWHERE in Oakland or Alameda... the scumsucking drug addicts that the liberal Bay Area so loves to coddle will steal you blind.

Yes, they will steal you kayak right off the top of your vehicle.

+1 - But, I would rephrase to say anywhere in California, or the U.S.

I got a couple cable locks from Walmart like Tote suggested when I visited him.  They were only 10$ each and easy on, easy off.  A lot more peace of mind when staying in place like Stockton, SAC, etc.

Alameda is no where near as sketchy as Oakland. It's basically a navy retirement village with a few upper middle class families mixed in. Alameda PD are a first class unit with a near instantaneous response time who get results. They run a super tight ship. You would be seriously hard pressed to find a single homeless druggie anywhere on the island, they know better and stay off the island. I've never heard of any problems with vehicles at the arw. The police and park rangers patrol the area regularly. There is a nice motel at the other end of the beach.

Yup I agree! The only time I'm scared in Alameda is when I've had a few drinks and I'm driving home.

If you prefer to camp, lake chabot is probably closest. Alameda is a nice island community as many have already noted. However, Arw parking lot and some areas in Alameda can get sketchy if u don't have any street sense. I lived there for 3 yrs and would have liked to continue living there, but couldn't afford it, so moved to san ramon.

Peace, y'all

I didn't even know that had camping a Lake Chabot... shows how much i get out in my own backyard... duhhh...

Wonder if you can launch by the campsited or if you 'have' to launch at the marina....

I've always been weary of parking at ARW.  I've heard of car breakins, especially if they see you unload and there were armed robberies in the past.   Alameda itself might be safe, but the RW is pretty secluded and sometimes draws the wrong crowd.

Party?  Let us know which motel you're at and we're there!  :smt002  San Leandro marina is an alternative for a pre fishing fiesta if there are enough peeps, but camping isn't allowed. It's well lit and I don't think it closes?

There's no camping AT lake chabot, but up the road at Anthony Chabot Regional park there's camping, near the shooting range.  It's a pretty far trek from the launch tho, definately not walkable with a yak :smt009

Heck, camp in my back yard, it'll be like camping at Chabot, but free.  I haven't cut the weeds in awhile.

You can see the lake from some campsites but as MBP says, the spots are nowhere near the water.

Been to ARW a lot of times for several years. DO NOT stay there or leave anything not bolted down. The driveway is 200 yrds long, with a lookout somebody can strip a car and NEVER get caught, and the best PD can't stop the amount of BS that goes on.
