If they rebuild reactors, they wont rebuild a Mark-1 reactor, its popular cause its comparatively cheap to build. My Dad was a nuclear engineer, he was the regional manager of the Indian Flats facility in NY, the oldest one in the country, even older than the Mark-1, he knows lots about the Mark-1 and says a lot of folks knew they were not reliable in more that a few ways. France took our best designs, decided on one of them and thats all they use, and they have their own supply of fuel too, but most other countries  have contracts goint to the best bidder, not very smart. Nuke can be safe and clean, but it will always be very expensive. Where do you put the fuel? They have tons of it sitting around because no one wants it going thru their town. My Dad spent 6 months in Japan designing the casks the transport spent fuel via rail, they still have not used them because on red tape, that was over 20 years ago...BTW we have at least a dozen Mark -1 reactors online here in the states, hope they pay the elec bill.

I just talked to my Dad for an hour, wow.... He was the project manger at Indian Point #2 and 3 till he retired in 96, I tried to google him without luck, maybe an NCKAer could have more luck, his name in Francis Williams. NRC has been on the phone with him for the past week, seems we had another problem with a Mark-1 that he was involved with in the 70s ,a fire in the core at Browns Ferry , its the closest thing that we have going on in Japan, and he was working on ideas on how to cool the rods but they put it out in time, this time its much worse...Im just a simple painter in a complicated world but my Dad is pretty freakin smart.

I use to think nuclear power was cool but now i'm starting to think the juice ain't worth the squeeze. I'll take the rolling blackouts. It is all a moot point considering the end of the world is just around the corner anyways :smt006

Bring it on.

10,000 years people have inhabited earth and it's only in the past 100 that we have just about ruined it.  Ever since we got the idea that we are pretty smart.  Maybe we'll know better next time.

It turns out that big brains are not a survival trait.

I read a report that said elevated radiation levels detected in sea water near the plant prompted testing of seafood. So much for the radiation falling "harmlessly" into the ocean. Isn't the albacore migration in that area about now?

I think I read somewhere that you'd have to eat 5-7pounds of salt a day to get a protective amount of iodine. Hmmm, salty goodness. "would you like fries with your salt?"

I was talking to a crab seller at Bodega Bay a few years ago. He said he ate enough rock crab that the iodine content made him sick. So, I guess, for radiation protection we should force ourselves to eat some rock crab.  :smt003

http://enenews.com/radiation-at-reactor-no-1-skyrockets-now-over-200-sieverts-per-hour
I believe the highest emitted from Chernobyl was 8Sv/hr
