I haven't hunted in years. I'm going out for pig next Sunday. Do you butcher your own or take it to a shop?

All depends on where you're going hunting.

If you have the funds have your pig processed at a butcher shop. Unless you're the kind of guy that likes to be a part of every step in getting your food from the field to your plate.

My buddies and me have taken one boar this year, about 350lbs.  I did all the dressing and butchering myself...if you have the funds get someone else to do it, it makes for a really long night!  If you get something in the 150 and under range, it's no big deal to do it yourself...nice to know where your meat comes from too.  good luck!

I have spent quite a few mornings up at Lake Sonoma this winter hiking around with my bow and only taken one shot. Last fall I was hunting with an NCKA legend (ChuckE) and we scored a double on private land in Lake County.

As far as doing the butchering yourself it's a breeze when you have the guidance of a pro like Chuck. I took the shoulders and hams to Martindales in Windsor to be cured. They are delicious.

Good Luck on the Hunt!

A long time ago I would take my deer to the butcher. What was I thinking? I've got two current pigs under my belt and am looking forward to cutting up another on my own. It gets easier as you go, with initial help from a buddy being pretty valuable.
I only need 2 sharp knives and my axe, though a hacksaw will do too. My 5'x2' cutting board is nice too. Not much went to waste and I'm thinking of trying the brain next time. I know, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, if I come to it.
It feels good to take it all the way from the field to the plate, on your own.
I await a report. Broadhead or lead?
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

We have a place that is $100 to hunt and $100 if you take a pig. A friend went two weeks ago. 4 hunters got 2 pigs. He said there was sign everywhere. I'll be using a rifle this time. I have hunted in many states but I quit hunting 10-11 years ago and sold almost all of my hunting guns.

$100 for a trespass fee and another $100 if your successful is a great deal. If there's pigs in the area.
