I generally troll grubs early and switch to rapalas late.  go slow.  When you think you've gone slow enough, go slower.  I setback around 100' or so.  don't be afraid to go in close to shore, the grubs are probably around 0'-3' feet down and are unlikely to hang on anything.  My favorite colors are orange, white, green/white and this pretty cool firetiger one i found last year that is green on top with an orange tail, made by riverside.  I scent 'em up with procure.

Great info there Ben.  Using grubs is a new thing for me and now I have some ideas on doing it right.-----Jeff

Awesome Ben! I'll never go to a trout lake again without grubs! :smt003

I'll give that a try!never used grubs but have had a lot of success trolling a small tube jig/crappie jig behind a 3" sling blade short leader of about 10 to 14 inches behind the dodger and I usually put a squirt of berkeley trout elixir in the tube jig...that setup has worked for me many times when nothing else seems to get their interest...always cool to find smething new that works!

Thanks a bunch for the other site Ben. It sounds very promising. I hope it increases my catch rate at Amador. :smt001

I've caught alot of Sierra trout trolling grubs about 10-18" behind watermelon Sep's sidekick dodgers.  Grubs soaked in pro-cure or berkeley trout juice.

Definitely a go to thing! My favorite is the brown grub behind a watermelon sidekick, i just am a fan of the smaller dodgers
Everybody should have the opportunity to fish

Thanks for the links Ben!  I gave it a shot recently, still had way too much line twist, even with a swivel.  Going to have to try some different hooks I guess, the Eagle Claw #6&8 just dont seem to work for me.  May be giving it another try this weekend  :smt003

Al, are you saying that the line twist is due to the Seps dodger?
I've never tried the dodger/grub combo, and was thinking of trying it- unless you had line twist issues...

Line twist issues result from inferior swivels.  That, and, grubs rigged wrong.  Later I can look up the correct type of swivel.

i troll on baitcasting gear, the line twist does not affect me as much as when i try to troll on spinning gear.  line twist would be due to the grub rolling.  if you don't put the grub on the hook perfectly, it will tend to roll.  make sure to check boatside to see if the grub is trolling straight or if it is rolling.

Yeah, thats the thing, I tried over and over to get it to NOT roll, but there is a slight curve to the EC Baitholder hooks that I think is causing it.  I couldn't find a small enough light wire worm hook to use for small grubs either.  I'm not sure if the Gamakatsu bait holders also have that twist in the hook, but thats what i'm going to try next.  I also got some of the action disc's, but I wasn't very impressed with the small size one (in green) so i'm going to try the larger (clear) one next.  I wasn't using a dodger at all for these setups, trying the top-lining technique, no weight, just a swivel.  Although, it wasn't a high quality swivel, so I'll try one of the fancy ball bearing ones next time.

Still, seems like a cool technique ;)
