I think using the turbo fins correctly is the key to increased reliability.  I liken it to having a car transmission with only 5th gear.  When you start from a dead stop you have to feather the throttle (in a Hobie you use short quick strokes to emulate this).  Once up to speed gradually increasing the pedal stroke and speed will get you to the mirage drives natural 5th gear with the turbo fins, now you can floor it.

If you pedal as fast as you can at the start, just like starting a car from 5th gear, you know something is going to give sooner or later.

I think you are correct.  However, I have never had the discipline to pedal that way so I think I'm much better off with the original fins installed.  I have used the yak a couple of time since changing back to the original fins and I'm very satisfied with the speed I'm able to attain.  I guess it's gonna be standard fins for me until Hobie comes out with a CVT.

I'm hooked on the Turbo fins and sincerely wish there was an even more aggressive option I can try.  However, I totally understand why someone might prefer the stock fins.  Having come from the world of mountain and road biking, I know not everyone is comfortable pedaling a low gear at high cadence to generate speed.  Some guys like to stand and mash a big gear when they climb hills, while others like to stay seated in the saddle and spin their way up the hill in a lower gear.

Yep, I'm a masher for sure and I ride my bike in about the same manner.  Old dog........new tricks.  I don' think anything's gonna change.  Fortunately, I don't drive a car with the masher technique with the price of gas these days.
