Sounds like Santa Cruz is sold out of MORF...   I'm hunting San Jose today for the little monsters!

You can buy ghosties, grass shrimp, bloodworms, and pile worms at The Tackle Box in Salinas. They also have every color Kalins 1.5" lunker grubs. Another good shop on this side of the bay is JD's Auto/Gone Fishin in Sand City--they don't carry bait but have an overwhelming assortment of grubs and Gulp baits. And Jim knows a lot about local perch & striper action. The other wildcard is ML Liquor store in Moss Landing on Portrero Rd. If you can't find MORF color...try perch power, pumpkin pepper, pumpkin pepper w/green flake, summer craw, mardi gras, or watermelon.

I couldn't enter the derby this year, but I still plan to fish for a few hours Saturday morning near Carmel if anybody wants to join me.

The shops by the harbor are well aware of the tourny; and usually stock up on live bait the 'day of' or the 'day before' the event. But to be on the safe side, i usually will get mine from a local shop down in hayward....

MORF found and purchased at Angler's on 41st in SCruz.   I've now got my full range of artificials.  Gonna do some trial fishing tomorrow am...

As Allen noted, I've not been out in quite some time.   I'm stoked.

Guess I'm not going to practice with perch this morning -- thoughts are with the folks of Japan!

Do perch bite better on an incoming tsunami or outgoing? 

Wow, great opportunity to find the holes today, though, when the surge was out it was incredible!

Perch Derby will proceed as planned.  Food fun and festivities at Potuguese hall starting around 12 and weigh in ends prompty at 2pm.  It's to the individual's discretion if they want to fish or not.  that is if the beaches and wharves are open......

I agree -- thank you guys for another fine event.   I made sure to go to the weigh-in so I could be reminded what a fish looks like.


I spent the beautiful sunrise in Marina and worked my way up to Santa Cruz with not even a nibble.   I don't know how the magicians found even one fish, I was completely skunked.

Left early, sounds like the raffle went well.  I gave my tickets to some guys I met in Marina, Salinas River, and Moss.  Hope you three won something good!

+1 on that. Didn't actually fish that day but did enjoy the food and company. Hadn't seen Fish Flogger in so long didn't even recognize him.
