Wednesday 1/25

Quote
Down in the South Bay, Bait Shop Mike at Oyster Point Marina in South San Francisco reported that some halibut have moved into the South bay. A 15 pounder was caught in front of the pier on a frozen herring and a 21.5 oz. halibut was caught from a boat off Candlestick Point. He said that one sturgeon was landed off Candlestick today. He has been running out to the Swirl in front of the pier in the evenings to land big numbers of walleyed perch. Mike will be bringing in live shiners this weekend to take advantage of the recent halibut action.

There's been at least 2 other reports on coastside about people pulling butts while sturgeon fishing.  Both at Oakland I think.

Guys.. I wouldn't get too excited just yet.  Those are "resident" butts.  A few are caught year round.  I don't think this means halibut are moving into the bay early.

Two days last week, I was fishing for sturgeon around the Oakland Airport when halibut were caught on both days by some the boaters/fishermen that fish there regularly.  I was talking to them on ch.68.  I got a little excited too, but the consensus amongst the veteran fishermen was that this wasn't anything out of the ordinary -- just a rare sturgeon fishing bycatch.

John - it is safe to eat any fish in the Bay IN MODERATION  :smt002

BUT it's definitely a "NO-NO  :smt018" to pregnant women - from I've heard.
