Looking for a good all around rod for Humboldt county kayak fishing. I have my tuna set ups for my trips to mexico and a spinning real set up I use to run irons through Kelp pattys. But as I am not experienced with Lingcod and other species Of the north I would love some input. Price isnt a huge issue my concern is in quality, cleaning and reliability. Im looking for a rod and reel I have allways been a penn guy but am open minded. Thanks alot

Im a cheapo with my ugly stix and $50 reels, cause I break everything  :smt003 But I know a lot of guys use shimano trevala's for most ocean species, rock cod, lings, cabs, butts, sharks, wsb, whatever. Never used them, but for $120, doesn't seem too bad.  The baidarka's look pretty sweet and they float!  My medium ugly stick has worked pretty good for everything so far, but Im not tooooo into tackle :smt001

I have to agree with MBP :) I've got 2 rods I use for lings/rockfishing: Shimano Trevala ML and Ugly Stik Lite Jig M paired with Abu Revo Inshore.

Both have done me well this season, having caught 2 WSB (31 & 48lbs) and lings up to 20+ lbs :)

Penn 501's are great. I also have had good luck with the Abu's 6500. Short of WSB not much around here makes long runs (or do you need to cast a mile) so I prefer level winds. But I agree if you want one rod the Trevala ML or M is a great set up.

I am 90% all Shimano rods now. Reason is; that they will replace for no charge in any store... or refund full price. I have a bad habit of breaking rods :) However, I do not have much exp for which type of rod for rock fish since I have not been doing this very long. Reels I like mucho at this point at the Revo Inshore and Toro 50... my favorite combo so far is the Revo Inshore on a Shimano CPC-70MHB. I think whats most fun for rock fish (after only 3 times out on a yak) is a typical bass rod set up @ 10-20# with a 6' to 7' rod.

straight braid?  straight mono?  braid and topshot?  line weight?  drag setting?  line capacity?  preferred gear ratio?  lever drag or star?  levelwind or topless?

if i was going to pick a reel for you, it would be a penn 501 with straight 50# braid (don't get it caught in between the spool and inner rings!) with a power handle and stainless steel gear sleeve.  it would be indestructible.  another nice option would be graphite reel.  either a level wind penn 320 gt2 or a shimano charter special.  for topless, the daiwa sealine graphites are very nice.

for the boat, i actually have a set of six trevala 7 foot sticks with the diawa 17 line counters.  they work great when fishing as a team.

Even though its a little on the hefty side, I love my charter special, esp the lever drag feature.  Good and reliable reel at that pricepoint

I just bought a Calcutta 400B as my all-around norcal reel to cover RF to lings to WSB and sturgeon.

My go-to rod is a Trevala, with another rod for WSB/sturgeon.  Curious to see what you decide on.

You absolutely can't go wrong with these options:

On the less expensive side:   An Ugly stick, with an ABU baitcaster like a 6500. The combo should cost you maybe 125.00.  Nice to start with some less pricey gear early on, because rooky mistakes are less painful. And you can catch all species up here in Norcal with that setup, absolutely.

If you have the coin and are willing to pay for super nice gear, you will love an Avet SX with a Shimano Trevala rod. You'll spend about twice as much, but you'll definitely like the rod and reel. Leash it!

There's my two cents,

Best,

Paul

easy to fall in love with the high end stuff. I have my share. but day in and day out I fish with the abu 6500....and yes I have a Revo Toro AND a Avet SX. This hobby will drain your funds! I would say the Revo Toro vs the Avet. The Revo feels nice in the hand and is eaiser to jig all day and RF will be your main fish in these parts.
