Well after months of deliberation and driving my wife crazy, I just unloaded a 2010 Hobie Adventure off my truck!  It was touch and go between the Hobie Adventure and a Tarpon 160, but I decided if I was going to go bigger, I was going to go big.  I got a fantastic deal, as it was on sale to make room for the 2011.  Only a little more then a new Tarpon.  I got the kayak, the turbo fins and a graphite hobie paddle included in the package.  I got yellow, as I have been very happy with the on the water visibility with the bright colors.

I have been paddling a Prowler 13 for 4 years now.  It has been a great kayak, but I wanted something with more speed and range.  I was getting tired of watching the Tarpons fly by me on tournament day!  My wife has the Hobie Outfitter and really likes the peddles.  I figured the Adventure was the best of both worlds.  The speed of a long kayak, and the ease of the peddles (especially after a long day of fishing).  I can't wait to really put it through the paces and rig it!

I have been pouring through past posts and getting some great ideas.  I am a minimalist when it comes to rigging.  I just want a fish finder and one or maybe two rod holders.  I think I will go with the sailing tube ram mount for the fish finder.  Central location and out of the way.  The rod holders may be ram mounts, but I would much rather have flush mounts of some sort.  That way there are no protrusions when I am diving or placing it on the roof racks.  I like the Scotty brands, so maybe a flush plate mount, with the open hole capped to prevent water intrusion?  I will have to do some research on the rod mounts.

Any case I would post pictures but it is too dark now.  I will be in full accessorizing mode soon!  Any rigging pictures and action shots are appreciated!  I am always looking for new ideas  :smt003

Thanks,
Matt

That's great.  I'm looking for an Adventure or Revolution.  Where did you get it?

Dont let anyone bring you down on your Hobie purchase. Congrats! If my knees werent so fucked up I would have one. Plus seeing the sail /outrigger for the adventure, well, that would be an adventure alright. ChuckE has one and has caught a ton off of it. He could probably share some in depthintel for you. Merry Christmas Matt!

Except by Ariel!   :smt003 That guy is a monster on the kayak.

I appreciate the congrats guys!  I am really exicted.  I think I got 3 hours of sleep thinking about all the rigging I want to do!  I think i am going to do this one right with a nice fishfinder and integrated GPS.  That way i can mark all the spots as I follow Black Ab around  :smt002

I wanted to go with flush mount rod holders, but will likely go with the ram tubes.  I think the flush mounts may interfear with the rudder cables, where they go under the mounting platform on the adventure.  I will have to check to make sure the bolts don't rub the cables when I install them.

I am still researching fish finders.  As I will be going back to a thru hull it will likely be either gooped down (although I have had problems with bubbles), or water in a foam base.

The fish finder, forward rod holders and an anchor trolly are all that is being added to this kayak.  I want to keep it clean and open.  Gives me more room to hog tough my fish!

I can't wait for GMS!  I will be tearing around the cove this year.  I feel some big lingcod in my future!  Can't wait to see you all at Shelter Cove!

yeah the KISS method is the way to go. I even ditched the plano/rear tackle box. I use the pack on the back of the seat for snacks, camera and some tackle (leader, scent, etc). I then use the tupperware 'box' that fits in the center hatch. I have one set for general fishing and another for RF.....so far less is more.

I also just picked this up...good deal for color/gps FF

Hows the tackle making coming along? I got some new ones I need to show off

Congrats on the new boat Matt.  You won't be disappointed - coming from an Adventure guy.  I also second the visibility factor.

Yeah, that is a great deal Eric!  So great, in fact, that they are sold out. :smt044

I really like the color fish finders.  They are so much easier to see on the water.  I will probably wait till next month before buying all the outfitting gear.  It would be hard to explain it to the wife after just buying the kayak and Christmas coming up (eg. a present for her).

I will definitely invest in a good fishfinder.  I think the integral GPS would be great.  It would allow me to make spots that routinely catch fish, structure, and landmarks.  My handheld GPS works, but the less gear on the boat the better.

Do you guys recommend investing in the sailing rudder?  I heard that it make quite a difference in tracking.

I am not sure I will get rid of the Plano box quite yet.  I find the rod holders on it handy for the net and gaff.  I will likely slim my tackle down to one or two tackle trays though, rather than 40 lbs of lead heads.  I will also use the tackle tray for the middle hatch, and considered putting a few smaller planos into the middle hatch for my tackle.  Maybe a little Velcro to hold them in place.  I don't want to load the hull as I want to be able to stow rods if the need arises.  I do want to get a back for the back of the seat.  That would be great for drinks and lunch.

EWB, I just started on the tackle again.  I have so much gear made, that I really have not had to make anything for a long time (and probably some time to come!).  I am playing around with a rubber octopus bait, a long jerk bait I can cut into squids, and that Braid head styled knockoff.  The knockoff needs a little work still, but has potential.  I can't wait to see what you have been doing!  Post up or send me a PM.

Matt

Yeah I will post up my latest creations. As for the sailing rudder YES....totally worth the $20. I can do a 360 in just over one boat length. Check out O2B's rigging on the plano box. His tie down method is great. Also I recommend mounting the ram mounts where he has them. My boat came with them behind the seat and it gets a bit in the way and tend to get tipped back. In reality I hardly use them. Pretty much only for bass when I have more than 2 rods. Otherwise I lay my net and trough in the tankwell and use the two factory flush mounts for rods. I added some extensions (I turned some black 1.5" PVC to fit, beat the $20 each they want for Hobie ones) to the flush mounts. Happy riggin!

A turbo finned adventure is hard to beat for speed and distance.  You will love it, congrats
