I am ready to purchase a wetsuit and after Tote's advice I think I want the Henderson Hyperstretch suit. I have a friend that said he can get a deal on a 5 mil suit but they don't carry the 7. I plan to dive Southern Cal off season and a little up north for abs and rockies, mostly in summer. Is the 5 mil a good compromise or will I regret it?.  Thanks for any help guys. FYI it's colder than hell here.  :smt011
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

You ain't got enough meat on your bones for a 5.

I think you'll be fine with a 5 mil in So CAl and Ab dive up North here.  I've been Ab dive in my 3 mil wetsuit for years but thinking about upgrade to a 5 mil so I can stay in the water longer.  If you SCUBA dive a lot then I would get a 7mil.

So, that means you can dive naked right?

Isn't that the only way to dive in?

5 will work if you're not in the water too long.
Being from Hawaii, I've never tried... 7mm all the way personally.   :smt003

Ironically, the better you get at diving, the colder you'll be.
As you learn to relax, struggle less, and lower your heartrate to hold your breath longer... you expend less energy and generate less heat.

If you like to spend time in the water up north then 7mm is what I recommend.
Down south 5mm will work fine.
Check your PM.

For me, it depends on how much Gatorade I drink before hand. (but even so, I still prefer 7mm)

I concure and agree with Tote. I use a 7mill Riffe open cell up north but I tend to stay in for at least 3 to 5hrs and when I dive socal I use a 5mill since the water is warmer

I've dove around divers wearing 3 and 5 mil suits.  Generally they're so cold they can't even string a fish.  I noticed young divers stay warm longer.  7 mil advocate.
