To S-S, the outback will go backwards, just lean forward and unlock the drive, spin it 180 and lock it back in.
But as far as this thread goes I've considered buying a second Yak for the ocean and shallow rivers like the Trinity.
River rocks can be very tough on the drive / rudder.
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

Don't care about peddle vs paddle, I just want a stable platform that isn't a barge

Look up definition of barge, and you'll see a picture of a Hobie Outback.

the current OB derives from hobie's original fishing-oriented molds.  Of course, the newer ones are far superior to the older models in alot of ways.  but you will still never win any races on an OB that's for sure.  Id say OB is fantastic if limited to strictly fresh water.  But if you want to get salty, better step it up to a Revo or Adventure.

Get out and demo the crap out of everything before you buy it.  But don't ruminate to death - resale on yak's remains pretty decent so you can periodically go through a different boat without seeing too much depreciation.  Ask Darius on that last point.   :smt003

one you pedal, one you paddle. what types of fishing are you going to be doing primarily?

Gotta disagree with you here Ben. ONE you paddle, the other you can Pedal or Paddle. Although I admit pedaling would be easier.

Demo, demo and demo...then buy the Hobie Revolution :smt003

all good advice... being an owner of both types.. I have taken my manta ray 13' out once since I got my outback.. that one time being a beach launch and landing... and Tote.. they are not fun to paddle..its like paddling a tank... the only paddling I have done in the outback is backwards.... and thru tight shallow sloughs or while standing up.... yeah...its that stable... :-) and yeah that 4.7 looks pretty trick too!
