I would like to permenently install a roof rack on my Matrix for my kayaks.  What are my options?  Best deals?  Where do I get something like this done?

I got mine permanently installed on my wifes murano, and got most of my rack stuff here.

Thanks, cool site.  I should mention that I used some yakima clamp style racks and damaged my roof a bit when I rammed it under a carport one day.  What about a kayak trailer as another option?

I think you should put the money into a battery charger!!!! Couldn't resist.

I've got stuff and that same place. Always good work. They sell yak trailers. But I think you are looking at close to 1K for one there. If you can find a single jet ski trailer that would be great. I have been looking for one for some time now. May be simpler to find in your neck of the woods.

I have both and use my rack a LOT more than my trailer.
More parking options w/o a trailer. You can driver faster w/o a trailer. You can maneuver easier w/o a trailer.
I use the trailer to store all my kayaks. It is very convenient to roll it out of the shop if I need the extra room to work on a project and wheel it back in when I am done.
A trailer is great if you are taking multiple kayaks with a ton a gear. If it is just you and maybe one other person; I would go with the rack.

I use a trailer for short trips and racks for longer. I like the trailer because I keep my yak ready at all times and I'm across the lake before the rackers are on the water.

I have a Yakima setup, I like their landing pads because they are not as high as Thule ones. I also like the round bars over the square ones, so I can adjust my J hook saddles to where they are supporting the kayaks fully. I did tons of research and shopping and ended up buying it at REI mostly because of the membership discount (including buying the membership). But I also installed it myself (big drill bit is scary going into a new car). If I did not do it myself I would have had Rack and Road install it.

Chancho, what model yakima did you use?  It sounds like you fixed it permenently to your car?  Thanks, this sounds like the deal I need.

Mickfish, what type of trailer do you use?  It would be more practical in some ways, but I also see Tote's point.

I have an 2008 Pontiac G6 here is my shopping list:

58" Cross bars
Landing towers
Landing pad #7 (you can use #6 if you want to take out your headliner which is what I should have done)
Lock set
44" Faring
Hullraisers (J hook saddles)

The 6 and 7 landing pads are the permanent install pads. The Q clip style for my car puts the cross bars too close together, by hard mounting them I spread them farther apart (for stability with my kayaks)

Whichever rack you decide on, check out prices on this site:  http://www.orsracksdirect.com/  Generally lower prices than the rest!

I have been looking at these as well. Is the tounge long enough to use with yaks? Or do they need to hang way off the end? I will be using it strickly for yaks. I also see they have a 'boat trailer'

Have you decided on one yet? I have been looking at the Perrycraft. Anyone has experience with it?

Compa, I went with the yakima set-up, as I had most of the components from my previous rack.  Thanks.
Chancho, thanks for all the help.
