For those wanting to do a little perching before the party I am think about Montara beach around 9 am. I am open to other spots in the area as well. I was thinking about exploring this spot:

Art and I scoped it out for a luanch once but decided to do a harbor launch instead. Seemed like a nice beach and a good free parking lot.

I've never been to Montara SB.  According to the state's website it is 8 miles north of HMB.

I recently got the skunk of my perch rod.  Randy and I are good with whatever site, big perch or small, that works.

Will you be fishing from the beach or yaks.
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!

I spoke to Marque from Coastide #2 - Tackle Shop.....according to his customers, the big perch are being caught all along Montara Beach (about 5 miles North of Princeton Harbor - it's where the restaurant "Chart House" used to be - it's now called "Outriggers")

I managed a few small perch at Rockaway Beach (a couple of miles North of Linda Mar in Pacifica) - that was a few months back - haven't gone since.

Surfers Beach (right next to the HMB jetty) is pretty flat and shallow - I never tried for perch there. No steep drop-offs.

I'm thinking Montara Beach (dog-friendly beach) - but if the surf is too big, Poplar Beach is a good "plan B". Poplar Beach is just South of HWY 92. You gotta pay to play  :smt011
Everyone bring your VHF radios = channel 69. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

I have surfed montara quite a bit and I think art g. was surfing it this summer a lot.

steep beach, lots of holes, sand grains are large, water usually very clear. not surprised
they pull some good perch from there on reflection.

But that place is usually huge, I only surf it when it's tiny everywhere else, never surfed
it in the winter, not even once, it's a deathtrap. in fact a guy died there last winter.
surfing, not perching,  :smt002.

But perching it could be pretty exciting if the surf is at all big. take care. waves are
always bigger and more powerful than they look from the cliff.

South winds (strormy) is forecast for saturday. waves big, but not gigantor.

on south winds, sometimes rockaway will have the wind at your back while you are
facing the ocean. of course it also faces north swells, but if the waves are north enough
they get deflected by other things north of there and it's not too big.

I don't know if you guys know the stretch of beach immediately north of pillar point. not that
easy to get to, but it is has big sand grains, clear water, but it
also has rocks.  It is possible that the shoreline just north of pillar point
will be sheltered from south winds
and the outer reefs will tame the swells letting you perch near to shore.
never fished it. surfed that stretch quite a bit. path down to the beach from the
road that goes to the installation on top of the point.

Further north on that stretch,
I have seen guys fishing off the finger reef on way low tide
near the spot known as 'flat rock' to surfers. This is closer to moss beach distillery
than it is to pillar point. it's a hike, I usually go in from the moss distillery side,
but it's a super cool stretch of coast and the hike down is always exciting!

the so-called 'surfer beach' (never surfed it,  :smt005) is flat, but as you head south
from there, to francis state beach, the beach ceases to be flat, and in fact in the
spring there are some big drop-off's there. never fished it, but surfed it a lot in
late spring. the zen-fishing guy says sometimes the fishing is good there.
Bill's poplar street location must be just north of here?

you can park for free on kelly steet and walk down.

can't you catch perch from the pacifica pier? that could be an option for you all?

have fun guys, I still haven't met anybody in 'real' life but I got kid's birthdays this weekend,
best to all the winners hope to see you guys when salmon season opens.

Thanks for the info J! I think the plan of attack should be:

1. Hit Montara first, maybe we can get Mooch to dawn patrol for us in advance  :smt002

2. If Montara is a bust start working our way south, hopefully Mooch knows the other beaches J is mentioning

3. Last resort is Poplar/HMB Ritz area.

I will have my cell 408-829-7670 and be on 69 if people want to touch base in the morning.

How do I get to a good spot that overlooks Mavricks?
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Mike - I can give you a tour. Maybe we do that after lunch? Bring your binocs....

John's info is right on the money. I have not explored the Distillery but it does look like a nice spot. Gray Whales Cove (the nude beach) - A mile or 2 from Montara =  maybe another spot to try  :smt007

I'll have my cell & VHF with me so holler when you're in town.

I've perch/surf fishing once before, caught a couple of small ones.  Tossed them back,  but I'd like to try give it another try
and maybe get a little or alot of advice on how to go about it. It was fun..
