It's all about ego.  Not that there is anything wrong with that.  I got a beautiful Impala shoulder mount in the living room.  My one kill from my one trip to Africa.  I love the fact that he is the best looking Impala I've ever seen.  I got the skull from the wailing pig I killed in my office.  Good times remembered everyday with a dose of the cold hard facts of life.

As a species, we are not long evolved from the hunter-gatherer days.  I know I hunt and fish because it is in my genes.  It's completely unnecessary from a pure modern day practical aspect with a Safeway on every corner.  Killing creatures feeds my ego because my bones tell me that is a part of what makes me a man.   Killing creatures is not always a pleasant thing, but it sure feels great to bring home some fresh meat for the family and have adventure stories to tell my bros.  Big-time ego stroke.  It's also humbling because it is a reminder that we are all road-kill waiting to happen.

Knowing that those coyotes needed killing does not lighten my heart seeing those two beautiful dogs dead.  You all saw how the retriever looked with sadness at his two dead brothers.  That said, who the F__K am I to judge another man's need to get the job done, provide a meal or bring home a trophy.

I AM A COMPLETE KOOK

Okay, I usually don't fall into such traps but here we go.  :smt005
ps don't think I could ever shoot a coyote, bear, big cat, etc unless my life depended on it

That's good to hear Allen. Now the big cats & bears that live in your neighborhood can finally come out of hiding.  :smt003

We did have a bobcat around until it was hit by a car...made me sad. Lots of foxes, coyotes, rabbits, skunks and raccoons abound. I stop and pull dead animals off to the side of the road a couple times a month on my way to work......I respect the spirit of the ones that met such a fate....other drivers just repeatedly run over the unfortunate. Heck, all summer long I collect all the snakes that are warming themselves on the road and release them on the property to do their thing. Life is good hear on the block unless you are in my sights......

Just because I'd like a few mounts in my pad doesn't mean I'm not a big softy, either.

Just yesterday I pulled all of my sticky mouse traps from my garage because I caught a big lizard in one and felt like crap.

And don't tell my GF this, but I almost crashed her 4Runner the other day swerving to miss a grey squirrel.

Howard, thanks for another view on the subject. The reasons you stated you like your trophy are different from mine and it's good to get more points of view.

I also think we all share a slightly different idea of what ego means to us.

Come on Andrew tell us the real reason you covet Ab Shells :smt044

Healing Properties of Abalone Shell

Holding a piece of abalone shell may make you feel: love, beauty, gentleness, caring, comfort, peacefulness, delight, solace, sand, water. Abalone Shell has the colors of the ocean in it, blues, greens, purples and yellows. It is soft to the touch from repeated tumbles in the sand and water. It has slight ripples on it like the patterns left in the sand as the waves lapse over it. It is comforting to hold it and rub the softness like you would a worry stone. People are instantly taken with its beautiful colors. :smt005

Sounds messy, how did the wailing pig get in your office?

When you find a critter that you want to save from a sticky trap, and YES Mooch that means snakes too- spray them with some PAM.

Just for the record, I meant no disrespect at all, Dustin.  When I said 'ego' I didn't mean it in the sense of showy, macho bs... And I was legitimately curious of your rational.

I kill gophers because I don't want my lawn all lumpy.    If I had no ego I wouldn't care about the lawn or what my neighbors think.  That doesn't make me egotistical, does it?

Like Juan said, we all draw the line somewhere.  It's interesting to me that we have so many viewpoints.

And yes, it's awesome we can have this discussion in civil tones.

I think this discussion would make Judge Judy Smile...! ! !...I happen to own a large ranch in Nor Humbolt...and do spend alot of free time there, when possible...I have seen, with my own eyes, the damage that theses predators can do...Taking a deer/fawn down..is not a quick death...We have choices in life...! ! !..To kill..or not to kill...I do my best not to judge people..Period..! ! !...So if i "choose" to take an animal or not...It's my choice..Whether it be a Ling,Ab,Blacktail..etc. ...So don't point your finger at me and say it's wrong to take an animal/fish/mollusk...When you maybe doing the same thing..! ! !..Maybe "YOU" need to take a "Personal Inventory"..on what you harvest...and to the young man who likes to hunt and have animals mounted...All the power to you Bro...! ! !...Acceptance and understanding/Key to a happy life...! ! !       ...Loco

No offense taken at all, man. I didn't even take offense to Malibu Two's comment, I was just frustrated that in my previous posts I tried to clearly state my opinion and he came back with a post that made it seem like I wasted my time trying to explain myself.
