she got scammed cause she was stupid. her an her fiance found a house posted for rent in the area(Humboldt). Was a great house, great rent. Had pics posted up of house, even had a local Realtors sign in yard.  The house was supposedly owned by church missionary's that were on assignment in Nigeria. So they  contacted the people an talked to them. The "missionary's" told them how they were so hoping to find a great family to rent their beloved house. The only problem they said was there was no key to the house in the USA, they had the only keys with them. Please send us a deposit of $700 an we will send you the keys. So my brilliant sister and her fiance western unioned them the money. So when it comes out it was a scam, they find out that it was all copy an paste, the Realtor said they were not involved with the house. So bye bye money, she went to the police, but what are they gonna do, the people are in a diffrent country.

Ouch, that hurts.  Best of luck in their house-hunting endeavors.

Thanks for sharing.

Never, ever wire money to Nigeria. Take a friend with you if you meet someone from CL. A second person isn't a guarantee of safety but it helps. I do a lot of business on CL and have never had a problem but it could happen. There have been a couple of times where the hair went up on the back of my neck and I stopped responding to people before meeting with them. Always talk to them on the phone before meeting with them. I ALWAYS talk to the person on the phone and get a feel for them before meeting them.

Agree, especially wiring moneys! My parents own a small convenient store which also offers Western Union. You dunno how many times we've had customers trying to send money, many times large amount. There were several occasions where my father has noticed something very "suspicious" with the transaction and has advised them not to send the money. The crazy thing is that ALL of them were adamant that the transaction was legit and all but 1 followed my dad's advice. The result: ALL, but 1 were scammed. Can you guess which one wasn't scammed? :D

One thing that everyone should be aware is that once the money has been transferred, there is basically no way of retrieving your money back especially if the money has been received on the other end.
