This is pretty disappointing I've broken two rodholders in my life both Ram's both broke in the same place. I was lucky this time last time I lost my fav TLD 5 Looomis rod and a huge dino. It broke easy. I guess that's why they slip.

I hear you! I have broke a few myself...especially the all plastic ones. One was the wsb hit and my prize Kunz stick went in...thanks to my rod leash or it would have been a goner.

Is there any way to detect a failure before it happens?  I checked mine and don't see any cracks or any visible signs of corrosion.

Looks like I need to rethink my habit of attaching my rod leash to the rod holder!

that is why i use scotty mounts, i have fallen on mine pulled my self in and generaly beat on them for two years and the work great, compared to my ram mount i use for 15 min and it broke right off.

Here's a possible solution to your ball breakage. I drilled and taped a ¼-20 x 1-1/2 SS-bolt into the center of the ram ball. The hole in the middle of the mount is close to a NO.7 drill witch is the one you need for a 1/4-20 bolt, I drill into the ball about 1-3/4 not out of the top of the ball, some pic below.
