If you bug FoodSaver about the dead machine, i bet they'll give you a new one.

I had a reconditioned unit that never sucked  :smt003 very well and gave it to a cousin's wife after 5 years. She, in turn, complained to FoodSaver that it never worked very well and got a new machine.

Eric you might want to be careful using braid on that reel.

Often skinny line will catch between the spool and side plates.  Depends on how thick the braid is, i guess, but rule of thumb is like 25-30 lb mono for those type reels to avoid OTW jams.

....and my experience is with 500's, 140's, and 146 (which is the skinny 140 squidder), the 501 might have closer tolerances.  Another good Tani question.

Allen, yeah that is my concern as well. I have some 80lb braid that will work but seems like overkill. I am gonna see what the 50 looks like and if its to thin I will use some 30 lb mono. I just really like braid  :smt007

I hear ya.  Even my Newell 332 caught up some 40# braid last week OTW while hunting Mr WSB.  Lucky I brought 2 rods. What a mess, I had to take  the Newell completely apart and literally cut the jam off with a razor blade.

Of course while apart I also lost one yoke spring ....BOING!!   Fubar all the way.  Damn braid.  I like it too.
