This was the first year in probably 8 years that I didn't make a single albie trip.  Most years I go probably 4-5 times.  Quite disappointing.  Especially since I had a ride lined up to mosthership the yak offshore.  Never was able to line up the weather and the fish.

well, maybe it'll happen this next year. My fish supply dude, patrick of mission fish had a few albacore this year so
I did have some killer albacore poke this summer, would be really fun to catch my own.

sean, did you catch that jack on the yak with one of your abus? I saw a gallery shot with you and a big fat pargo
and an abu.  yeah, I'm still hoping to trick you into getting a newell for your kunz stick. voyeuristic buying.
But's it's going to be hard if you landed the jack with your ambassadeur.

Ok, Sean, Allen, John...all this pelagic talk has really got my blood boiling. We've made up our minds:

2006 = Alaska

2007 = Baja

Can't wait! :blob1:

I caught that particular jack on a Shimano Tekota and he ruined it...not kidding.  I buttoned it down to get it in and..well lets just say I wish had read Alans threads of wisdom about maximum drag settings etc.  Sent it to Irvine and they sent me a new one...not a bad deal.

I fished Alaska with Howard last year, had a great time and the scenery is incredible, but I will take the fishing in Baja any day.

scwafish, I am remembering from another thread, you only brought the one reel, right?
that's one baja lesson for sure, bring spares of the essentials. Well, that is a worthy
death for the reel, death by fish, and to get it replaced for free is pretty lucky! good job!

I saw a photo of jelly with the dorado, is that what hit him a few days later? that is one lucky kid man,
I have to say.  Did you ever post a story of your baja trip? I'd love to read about it.

Blue,

I've never fished albies from the yak.  I remember I think it was 3 years ago that there were reports of albacore 2 miles off Pt Pinos.  There was some talk about a kayaker getting into them, but as far as I could distill it was someone talking about possible going out there, but never did make it.  The window closed as fast as it opened.  Other than that year, I don't remember them coming in closer than 10 miles.  I think 3 years ago we had them about 12 miles out for at least a 2-3 week window and there were sporadic 2nd hand reports of some people finding a few a bit closer.  I follow the local albacore scene quite closely.  For sure I'll let you all know when we could possible do a paddle attack on them.

Local albies would be insane.  I got into some little YFT in baja last year and they were FUN!  I hooked into a couple of good ones and lost them both right under the yak. :smt010   With the fight of an albie, plus the blood loss of a tuna, combined with distance offshore and the neighbors around here, that might actually qualify as extreme.

Just curious, did anyone else have some trouble with this site the video is on. I find that the video is hanging a bit and I often get bumped off of IE while on it. Just looking for input, thanks

Whoooooooeeeeee!!!! Man that looks like fun!!!  I'll have to save my nickles and dimes and try to get out there with you!

I think it is "extreme"ly lame that Sammons erased any mention of ncka.org from his website, then posts thinly-veiled commercial solicitation in this thread.

Take a look for yourself.  Sammons posted a thread a while back on the norcal message board for kayak4fish.com, inquring why his site traffic for NorCal was way down.  When somebody turned him onto the exodus to ncka.org, Sammons redacted the entire thread!

I think your animosity is misplaced.

It's not a symmetrical relationship.

sammons is pretty up front about the fact that it's a business for him.

I recall he posted his position on the thing where somebody was removing
brendan's posts from his nor cal board. Basically Brendan was a competing
guide and Brendan's own affiliations were distinctly competitive.

pretty straightforward really.

so from that perspective, he's just doing what he does to stay on top.

whether some of his business decisions will harm him in the long run is difficult to say.

Overall, the traffic on his site speaks for itself tho. he must be doing something right.

At the end of the day, all these guys that run a site can "censor" it (maybe edit
is the appropriate euphemism) and will probably have to at some point.

As far as I know, Bill is pretty much more of a non-profit kind of thing, whether
he incorporated or what I don't know tho. But he might wake up one day and
decide the hassles outweigh the benefits, you never know, it's happened before
with other special interest websites. nobody is immune.

But Bill probably does not regard Sammons as a competitor at all so it's no big deal
for Sammons to post more or less ads on this site, right? Same with any of the guides.
ironically Bill's independent position could lead to his site getting pretty popular.

Even here, tho, I definitely get an exclusionary vibe from the more commercial posters.
It's clique-ey. just like surfers. there's the locals and the outsiders (kooks).
I'm a bit of shit-stirrer tho, so I'm not too surprised.
At the end of the day people are competitive and you always get into that
at some point, especially once money is involved.

I'd love to see a battle of the guides tho, like bass pro, but kayak pro! :-).

That dude C-level kicks ass, so does Brendan for that matter. sammons record
looks pretty impressive.

I'm glad I'm just a regular joe weekend warrior.
Sometimes it's a real relief to keep work and fun distinct and just do something
for the pure fun of it. Then you can argue with anybody and lose very little!  :smt004.

[Bill you are one generous dude.]
Get the facts before you make accusations.
Yes when this site first came up there were some hard feelings, which have been worked out between Bill and I for some time. I had provided a site for the NorCal guys to go to to share their information, there was only one small message board up here at the time. So when this site popped up right as we were having some problems with our server, it seemed very suspicious. The bad timing made for bad feelings. Again these issues have been resolved and Bill has invited me to post on this site and he is welcome to post on mine. If you look on my site you will often see posts that have mention of other sites, I do keep it pretty open. Let's put it this way, if Bill were to post on my site with a fish report and in his signature he has a link to this site that is not an issue for me. If you post on the site go here just to direct traffic here that is an issue.
Second I did not delete the thread you mentioned, It was automatically pruned as all posts on that forum are after 6 months. This is done in an effort to save bandwidth on several of our forums such as the gear for sale forum. Until you mentioned a post being deleted I didn't realize pruning was turned on on that forum. I generally only look at the new posts and never scroll down.
I do recall the post you mention and the question was why the lack of activity on the forum, I was not asking someone to answer with a redirect link to another site. So I may of deleted the link or that post, I honestly do not remember.
I want my site to be as informative as possible for kayak anglers all over and with that want to see the forums active. I am not asking for people to use my site exclusively, I would just like to see some fishing reports and such from up here as well as all areas, it just adds value to the site. There are a lot of kayak fishing sites around now and we see people posting on multiple sites, even sites in the same area. I rely on traffic to the site so people can see what we are doing. You don't see any advertising on my site and that is the way I like it, so the site makes no money on its own, but it does cost me a lot. So having people come to the site and checking out our trips or products is very important. You may notice that the links to the video were not even to my site, but another hosting site. There is no thin veiling, I want people to see the videos and hopefully come on a trip with us, that is one of the reasons I posted the videos. The other reason for posting them is that they are pretty cool, and whether people go out with me or not , I am sure as an interested kayak fisherman they would like to see them.
I hope that answers any questions about this issue, if anyone would like to discuss these issues with me personally feel free to email or give me a call.

What are the qualifications anyway, is there a college degree for guides or you just hang a shingle?

I often wondered myself...

besides local knowledge of the fishing grounds and weather patterns.....

do you have to pass an ACA test ?
know CPR?
liability insurance? (I'm sure)

I also noticed that Jeff Krieger (Mr. Rhino) has a registration number on his kayak? What's that about?

See a list of registered California Fishing Guides here... you'll notice both Jim Sammons and Jeff Krieger on the list among others.
