A good deed done!  Nice way to finish out the year.  It never ceases to amaze me how foolish people can be.  This guy was just waiting to be the next kayak accident.  "You done good!"

Happy New Year!

Martin

No good deed at all. I was just being selfish and was worried the poor guy would take me with him.

Good job buddy. Looked kind of normal out there. Smokon' outgo all weekend too. Bigger at BP. Almost 8 out. I was hoping the note was what it was. If you fall in there and get separated from the boat and you are alone.................................. :smt006 By the time they find you............... you'll be the same temp as the water.

You are right Craig, BP was smok'n when I checked it out around ten-thirty. I was ready for anything to go wrong today so I stuffed  a flare  in my pfd along with my radio today..... it was a rodeo.......much worse than the pictures showed. I do find it a thrill doing what we do ...but it's a calculated thrill....

I have a YouTube of today but they (YT folks) my password is incorrect.....what do they know :smt044

Nice job Allen!

Scary to think of the guy out there like you described in those conditions.  Wonder if he had been out before or where he got the idea????

John, he'd been out there on a calm day in a PB prior and thought it would be cool. I  really respect the kid ..... some people's ego would have played it different.

buddy is great...does anyone make a habit of a float plan? I tell the wife in the AM. But considering her state of sleep and the time of the AM I depart god knows if she'll actually remember. Guess I should scribble it down in the future.

WTG, Allen. Nice happy ending.  :smt002  The note was cool - some people do learn from their mistakes and a little coaching sometimes.

Good thread, I carry:

NRS Chinook PDF
Uniden waterproof radio
Wenoka blunt tip knife bolted onto my PDF, great for ropes and bait!
An ACR saftey strobe in my PDF, very bright, almost blinding light.
Whistle
Compass
Candy Bars  :smt003 I get hungry on the water.....
GPS
Safety light on the stern of the kayak

On the compass, I am going to mount one on my kayak but always have a floating one in my pocket.  It allows me to shoot a bearing to a known object if in sight on land for rescue to follow.  Great if you get seperated from you kayak and easier to use than a boat mounted at times.

The gear that is not perminately mounted to my PDF, is kept in pockets or clipped on, with a short leash attached to one of the tie points on the PDF.  That way they don't sink or float away when I really need them.  The leashes are simply wrapped around the item and it is placed into a pocket.

Seems like a lot, but it doesn't take up much room.

Matt

I actually picked this up while out xmas shopping. Not sure how long it will last but we'll see. Knife, whistle and light. All in a small package

Thanks for the info Allen. I agree, got to respect the guy for listening to you and making the right decision, and for seeking out an adventure to begin with. It's just fortunate he was able to learn a lesson and not pay the ultimate price that day.

one thing that I've learned the hard way is that self rescueing is different with a wet suit on,  it is fairly easy to due in swim trucks, but a 5 mm wet suit is a lot different.

one other thing I carry is a tube of super glue in case of deep cuts.  I also carry a amatuer radio so as to have contact with people(Fcc license required)
The more the merrier.

I and my dog need a fishing trip rery soon.

Figured I'd say what I have on my vest.
 1. knife (sog seal pup)
 2. VHF radio
 3. 2 handheld flares
 4. Whistle an signal mirror
 5. Emergency strobe
 6. chapstick,sunblock,zipties

Seems like alot but I invested in a nice PFD an it carries it all very well an never gets uncomfortable. All this is in addition to my ditch kit

Brains aside...

On/in my PFD (which is always worn):
VHF marine radio http://tinyurl.com/vhf150
Pointy knife (lost my blunt tip)
Whistle
1 small hand held flare
1 dye marker http://www.orionsignals.com/Wilderness/Products/fluoresceindye.html
Powerbar (I get hungry too)  :smt002

Elsewhere on yak:
bilge pump
Garmin GPSMap 76 on RAM mount (which is currently not working for some reason)  :smt013
compass (mounted in yak)
more flares
water bottle
cell phone (in dry box w/ my keys)

I like the idea of duct tape/super glue for cuts, I'll be adding one of those.  I'll also carry my old Hobie paddle as a spare, assuming I can ever unfreeze the 2 sections that seem to have permanently bonded.
