Okay, I realize that I might be setting myself up for some razzing, but when wearing my wetsuit, my lower legs and feet go numb after a few hours. It gets a little bit uncomfortable on the water, but my main concern is not being able to feel my feet when surf landing. I don't want to do more damage unwittingly. Does anyone else experience this?  I wear an XL 3mm farmer john that seems plenty big. I am not a huge guy at 6'1" 185. I don't strap down the top of my booties either. I only wear the wetsuit when rockfishing and I do not believe that the water temps are so severe as to cause the numbness. Maybe I need to try a different manufacturer. I can't see springing the dough for a drysuit either. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I think your wetsuit is too tight at the lower portion of the leg which restricted the blood flow to your feet!  You might consider to "stretch" them out a little.

What thickness booties are you wearing? I need at least 5ml to stay warm & 7ml is better. 3ml doesn't cut the mustard for me when I'm surfing and especially not on the yak. Even with the thicker booties if I'm OTW long enough my feet will get cold and then numb if it's cold, overcast sky, and windy. This winter I've taken to wearing the Kokatat dry pants over the top of the farmer john plus the booties = warm all day.

i suffer from that no matter in a wetsuit or in shorts = poor blood circulation to lower extremities when sitting on ass for lengthy periods of time.

i remedy it by bracing my feet and hands on the yak and lifting my ass up as far as possible, as long as possible. like doing the ol'Crab walk stance. Kinda crazy, but it works and is wayyyyy better that quitting or going to shore.= more fishing time. :smt004

like this, but without the walking, just the position to lift your buttox, so the blood can get to your feet/ circulate.

Are you using a seat pad? as has been said, sitting on hard plastic for a few hours can mess with your circulation.

After years of going without, I think I am going to finally cave & get some form of butt padding for the kayak.

Yup, its a circulation issue for sure!

Last year i fished with Stoggie for like 8 hours, i was literally not capable of walking upon landing.... had to take it to my knees to get out...

I find pumping my legs works, or FisHunters trick....

Also spending some time sitting side saddle helps me a lot...

+1             I forgot about this. I have one of those self adhesive pads that goes under the kayak seat pad. It
doesn't stay adhered to the yak plastic but once I shove it under the seat it stays put all day. jim

My legs go numb from sitting on my yak. I've used the gel pads and air cushions to keep my legs from going numb. After a long day on the water the last thing you want is not being able to stand up when it counts.

I wear some hiking sock liners under 3 mm neoprene socks under my NRS workboots (5mm?), and my feet are still cold, but not numb. I'm also wearing kokatat pants over my farmer john over my fleece sweat pants!   For me, it's the inactivity that does it, I don't have that problem surfing with thin booties.  Leg kicks help, and I always do them as I get ready to land, because otherwise I look like a drunk when I try to stand up.    I thought a Hobie might help, but someone who owned one said the position of the paddles made his legs go numb, so I gave that idea up.  NRS sells some mid-calf booties - I might try those.

Thanks for all the suggestions. So are wool socks under the booties still effective when wet? I am pretty sure my booties are 5mm. I will upgrade if not. And come to think of it, I used a pad below my seat on a 5+ hour float down the river last weekend and felt great. Of course it was 90 degrees out and I was full of beer. I was just glad to be able to feel my feet enough not to fall on my face in front of hundreds of people @ Johnson's beach. I'm also definitely going to try the crab stance too. Maybe start doing some good stretching beforehand. Thanks again for the tips! Chad

Are you wearing anything on your head?  I would get a nice wool beanie and get some thicker booties.  You lose 20% of your body heat from your head.  I have seen macho men try to scuba in CA waters without a hood and come up shaking like an aspen tree.  The same applies to all other activities.
