went with my wife to capitola and rented a skiff from ed to go out. swells were small and the water was green and a bit milky. current was running north while the wind was blowing south and then it changed....

i pretended i was on the sea of cortez in my very own 6 hp panga and i asked my wife to call me juan for this day. just this one time to leave it all to my imagination.

we drifted for halibut and got no bites.... we moved to the kelp beds and struck luck with big rockfish. big browns and my wife scored a cabezon. she commented on the lack of teeth, nice eyebrowns and the silky smooth skin..... reminded us of our daughter though she is a bit squishier.

we saw quite a few fishing people out and the weather was nice. wind was a bit strong but its ok. we had not been out together in over a year now.

i decided i too want to get my own skiff to go out on and am now looking for a boat.

this day was good. we took home 4 big rock cod and threw everything else back. fishing was good despite wind and current running. we used grocery store squid and laser circle hooks. they seemed to hold the bait well and we just let them sit on the bottom til the rods started bouncing. it was really a low effort fishing trip. we just took it easy.

on the sabiki i got a lot of good sized smelt as well. i was going to use them for bait but gave them to the birds who were buzzing overhead.

i have to get me a little boat now!

Sounds like a great time with the family!  I went out once in the Cap. Boats with a co-worker and got teased by Stoggie and some other yakers that were out there  :smt044  I'd love to go on your boat when you get it  :smt003

wow Jim, that sounds like a good time. i just have this weird feeling when things calm down in capitola its going to wide open for RF and halibut. for myself, to catch fish on a pole and in strange weather was already a weird enough experience.

i just feel like something big will happen in the near future there as soon as mother nature calms down a bit.

i have always liked it there. even when its rough way out, you come inside and there are always places to fish safely.

Hope my tunes didn't disturb you guys...

It was a nice day, escpecially given the cruddy forecast...if you get a skiff and ever need somebody to go out with just let me know!!

Jim,

When I read that you used Tony's on your fish, I knew you had to have ties with Nawleans.

Only a good Cajun would know about Tonys. But now Safeways are carrying it too.

Are you referring to Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning?

Howard,

There is a whole family of Tonys' products. They even sell a roux base for those who can't make a roux...
