WTG Jim, you gota love that place. Even when the fishing is slow, the beautiful vistas are awesome. From your pics of the swells breaking on the Point I can see why you all played it safe and fished inside the cove.

Hi All,

Might as well add my two cents as well :) .  I almost decided not to go due to the WX, but decided that since I posted the hookup it would be bad form for me not to show.  The night before I went to Mooch's 'surprise' farewell party and had a great time but ended up staying until almost 10:00 PM.  After getting everything ready I didn't get to sleep until around midnight.  I was planning to leave at 4:00 AM, but I woke up late so I didn't leave until 5:30 AM.  I just got to the carmel when my car's engine light went on and my car started to misfire.  Never the less I pressed on and promptly got lost.  Then I remembered that I had one of those android phones so I turned on the turn by turn navigation and eventually made it to the launch.  So, I had a few mishaps on my way to the opener, but I finally ended up making it to the launch at 7:30 AM.

Paddling toward the rest of the crew at the beginning of the day.

When I got there it looked like there were around 10 or so yaks already on the water.  There were about 5 more unloading when I was.  I finally unloaded everything and started paddling out onto the ocean.  I started out throwing a blue/brown/gray fish trap and on the first cast I see a decent olive rush out, but it turned away when it got close to the swim bait.  I stuck with that combo for an hour without any luck.  I than switched to frozen sardines.  I threw one toward the edge of some kelp on my mojo bass rod with an okuma serrano reel.  In about 10 seconds I feel a good hit and I rear back and fish on!  After a nice fight I bring the fish to the boat and it is a nice 16" olive rockfish.  First rockfish on my yak!

My first kayak rockfish!

After another half hour or so I fail to get hit as I keep drifting quickly through the kelp.  Getting somewhat frustrated I watch some other guys and see that they are hooking up the kelp.  I do the same and drop another sardine to the bottom, I immediately get hit and bring up a small 12" kelp rockfish which I return.  I move a couple of times and hookup to another big kelp strand.  I drop down and immediately get hit.  It is a small 14" lingcod.  I do this a few more times each time resulting in an undersized lingcod.  All in all during the day I hookup to 6 lingcod going from 14" upto 22".  I catch 2 more 12" kelp rockfish which I also return to get bigger.

I finally paddle into shore to join the rest of the crew.  I met a bunch of great people there - Pat, Sara, Al, Big Jim, Stogie, Andy, Porky and a few more whose names I am unable to remember right now (perhaps you will post so I can remember everyone I missed?).

So despite the mishaps at the beginning of the day, it turned out to be a great day overall.  Good fishing, new and old friends and great food.  What more can you ask for?

Michael

Hey Jim,
Making everyone jealous is a job well done.

You did it...and made a memory that will last !

Way to go! You deserve it for having the "get up and go" as the rest of us looked at wind charts!
Sitting in front of the computer and TV all day today, I didn't even get a nibble.

What can I say that others havent?  Not much! But I'll say it again!  :smt044

What a great time we all had, as usual  :smt002  It was great to meet some new friends, as well as harass the old  :smt005  The conditions were a bit snotty, making it tough to fish any of our normal spots.  Sara and I were getting blown all over the place but then she pulled up her first ever rock fish and I managed to get my first of the year as well.  We then headed over to see what the Dive Team was doing, and chill on the beach for a few.  We headed in pretty early, and got the party started  :smt003  LOTs of food, beer and laughs all around! Good times!  :thumright:

Until next time!
