Please note that Mooch doesn't say Humminbird sucks... just the Pirhana portable

 TRUE!

I now have a permanent FF set-up and I'm very happy with my Humminbird 535. I've had it on my yak for over 2+ years now (in the worse possible conditions = Linda Mar) and it's still working like new.  :smt023 :smt023

That was dumb on my part.....sorry to Mooch about the misquote.  But, again thanks to all for the info.  Sounds like Erik has a good tip on the eagle 240 as a good low rent unit. Erik, does it easily disengage from the mounts?  Seems like just what I'm looking for.

whew, you almost got me to buy a ff there erik. my shopping cart was full,
the credit card was at the ready.

the dark side is strong in this one.

fortunately I got distracted and then thought the better of it.

we'll see if I feel it's holding me back this season.

Yes... it comes out of the mount very easily.  There are two plug receptacles on the back, one for the Power/transducer cable and one for an optional temperature/speed transducer which I just filled with silicone to seal it.  Apply a liberal coating of dielectric grease to the other plug and you're good to go.  I've been very happy with the unit.

Jmairey... whew... glad you were able to pull up on the stick... that happens to the best of us  (it is a really good deal though :smt077).

Good try erik,  :smt002

I hear the fish finder, as sonar, mimics a big GWS favorite delicacy: dolphin.

so it's kind of a fish caller, as well a a finder, I guess.

They have portable handheld depthfinders, look like a flashlight, I guess you just
point it over the side and have a quick depth check. plus it doubles as a light
saber.

Well Lord Vader, I mean Erik, the dark side was too strong for me on this one . I'm going in with the eagle 240.......now I need to do some Jedi mind trick to make my wife believe that it's not a ff.  It's actually a new fence around the yard.

The fishfinder is a DFG compliance tool so that you don't get an expensive fine for being in water over 120' with a blue rockfish on board....... :smt004
