This post is a year old, and last year, the family ended up going to Collins Lake.  This year, we're thinking of either Van Damme or Russian Gulch.  Since they fill up fast, I'd like to make reservations now.
I have 2 kids (9 and 13) who like camping, fishing and hiking (and local sightseeing).

I realize both Van Damme and Russian Gulch are fine choices, but what do you like better about one over the other?
I'm assuming shower facilities are the same (pay showers), but maybe one place is better for privacy? ocean views? access? convenience?  what's your take?

Thx in advance for your voting!

Van Damme and Russian Gulch both have variety, great hikes, exceptional ocean access and views, and Fort Bragg is just minutes away for a pizza and movie if you want to do that one nite.  Reservations at either of these places fill up uberfast.  I think these 2 will offer more variety than any of the others.

Stayed at all the parks you picked cept Hidden Pines and i agree with Dale for the same reasons, but the best campground we have found for the whole family is http://www.collinslake.com/

Russian Gulch is nice and reasonably priced.  We end up staying at Pomo Campground just up the road quite a bit.  We usually make reservations.  They have quarter showers, power and water hookups, and a small store for ice and essentials.  It it nicely forested to give each site a lot of privacy.  It is close to town and the dive shop which makes it convenient!  Just another suggestion.

Unless you just want salt water, I would also look at the Eastern Sierras. June Lake, Twin Lakes, etc.  Lots of small lakes that will be kayak friendly, fantastic views and some great hikes.   We stay at Pine Cliff on June Lake.  They do not take credit cards, but is about $22 a night with my truck camper.  Tents are less.

Van dame is very nice.  I try to stay there once a year.  you can kayak and hike the big river, lauch form the beach at vandame and ocean fish or view the caves, and ab dive.  Has quater showers.

Mackerricker is also good.  it has trout in the small lake that is stocked. there is bike ridiing oon the logging road.  also has quater showers.  you can also ocean fish here to.

The more the merrier.

I and my dog need a fishing trip rery soon.
