I can learn to respect the keep aspect if it is exercised by a knowledgeable angler who knows there is another side of the pond that doesn't exactly feel the same way.

Why?  Why does it have to be "exercised by a knowledgeable angler".  Does it make the act of harvest any different?  I don't think so.  We're back to "you all" imposing your sense of right and wrong on others.

I'm more or less playing devils advocate here now, so don't take me too seriously.

For example, I don't think a knowlegable angler would take home the lake record bass just caught at New Melones purely to fry up and have for dinner.  I would like to think that he or she would know enough to recognize it as a special fish unstead of just a tasty treat.  But remember what I said repeatedly, you would hear grumbling coming from my corner if this happened.  That is it.  I didn't threaten anybody, what could really be done?  I would merely voice my dissatisfaction with the whole deal because I would have done it differently.  Yes, in my eyes there is a correct and incorrect harvest.  To me, keep isn't unconditional, I'd like to think that it isn't to everyone else as well.

What about putting trophy Bass on the wall as I've seen many Bass anglers did?  I thinkit even worse than eating the fish!

Actually now most people go with replicas.  Couple pics and measurements and you are good to go.  I wouldn't know, I'm still trying for mine!

Great thread here.

Looks like we all learned something about respecting others morals, opinions and beliefs.

We can all be labeled as hypocrite's as we all target some species or another during the spawn or other importand parts of the life cycle:
Lingcod move shallow to spawn = best time to try for one
Salmon head towards bays and fresh water to spawn = best time to try for one
Bass go shallow during warming in spring = best time to try for one
Halibut head shallow = best time to try for one
Crappie school shallow as water temps rise = best time to try for one
Trout school around the rivers = best time to try for one
This is just a small list of examples
The truth is most of our fishing habits are directly based on the life cycle and spawning habits of each species.
If we didn't take advantage of some part of this we would not catch nearly the quantity or quality that has been posted on many pages of this forum. Many species would colapse due to under pressure or over pressure from other species. Even the mighty Bass would be in danger from a constant attack during the spawn from the more aggressive breeding Crappie which would overtake the Bass bed to devour the eggs.

Original Question:

Is it really wrong to keep an occasional fish for dinner during the spawn or any other time?

IMO C&R bassin' is really all about respect for the locals. X and B are bass fishermen who frequent the same spots a lot.
Although bass fishing isn't what I'm really into I do respect the locals. If they tell me their spot is getting hammered I'll listen so I don't ruin it. Nobody likes it when someone craps in their backyard.

Zee, as I stated before, in the 3 days I was out there fishing with everybody else (NCKA'ers)...only two fish were kept. I don't think we ruined / crapped in their backyard. And CL is not exactly a close drive for most of us. In fact, I only know a hand full of NCKA'ers that fish this lake periodically AND don't keep any fish at all. So as far as I'm concerned, no disrespect was given to any of the locals. I believe the compliant about keeping 2 bass was a bit overblown - no disrespect X, I'm just stating my opinion here.

And I'd like to add this: If you look back at all the Clear Lake reports here in NCKA...I'm almost sure that you will see that no one has ever kept a bass - even during the non-spawn season.

Just my 2 cents....

Problem is this is California.  There are so many people here that any lake with fish in it will have pressure.  If locals tell you that a particular spot is getting hammered...and it's locals who "frequent the same spots a lot", then it sounds like much of that pressure is exerted by those same locals.
