I did discover that it's very difficult to take a picture while dipping into the wave.

I can hold the net for you so you can take "perfect" pictures  :smt003

I'm facinated by the night smelting. I hope I'm not hijacking by asking a few questions. Maybe someone will have answers.

Do they run anywhere in Marin?
Would the closest place be HMB?
Is the A-frame the only way to go?
I could make one, but where would I get the netting? Weaving that is beyond my skill and patience by many, many miles.

Any help on this topic would be wildly appreciated.

Allen... that's so sad to see new signs restricting what you (we) once loved to do.  I like your attitude.  You know how to make the best of any situation.  Count me in for you next attempt.

It would be cool to find a good smelting place that allows dogs, picnicking and bonfires at night.  Are there such any places left?

Maybe Muir beach chuck.  Portuguese beach allows dogs in Sonoma county not sure about the fires though.

This brings back memories of many many moons ago when I was a little guy. I'd hang out at night with my dad and his buddies by a huge galvanized tub watching them unload a bunch of smelt into it. Simpler times... good times...

Freddie, Chuck, and All, We will be doing research and gathering intel for our next outing. An NCKA hook up will be posted with hope of everyone joining in on the fun. If anyone has intel for the south bay please pass it along. We have three A-frame nets and are willing to share....once all the stars are aligned......

Oto,

Interesting post,

I remember seeing people dipping those triangle nets in the surf at Muir Beach when I was a kid (about 25 years ago), haven't seen anyone using one since. Sounds like a night thing but the parking a Muir at night is a bit of a challenge or actually a bit of a hike. I read something about how Martins Beach used to be the hot spot for smelt, sounds like that place may be closed off for good now.

Thanx,
