Hi Yakers;

I over bought some 40Lb. Spectra which is .15 Per Yd.
or $51.00 without asking the price before loading. :smt044
I haven't purchase Bulk in a long time so the bottom line is put it on yourself to save money.
I did have them put a Top Shot for Free so I didn't get Hosed too Bad. :smt044 I'm too easy when gearing up for " Give-me
Shelter".                                                    Sea-ya at  GS4

whoa, they put 340 yards of spectra on your reel?  a good tackle shop should have known that was not necessary.  especially for RF.

generally you do a mono backing, then 100-150yds of braid, then whatever you want from there.

The price of Spectra in bulk is .15 per yard X 100yds installed = $15.00
This line will last 10+ years.
If you think you got hosed than you should look at the cost of doing it yourself
150yd Spool of 40lb Power Pro = $11.99
Backing (Mono) = $3.00 - $5.00
Knowing how much backing, what knots to tie, How tight to wrap = Priceless (comes with experience)
It is also fair to say that a reputable shop would charge extra for the extra time involved to wind your reel properly.
If you spooled up 1 time a year with 250yds of basic 25lb at .03 the mono will cost $75.00 to replace over the next 10 years
I think you got a deal

The amount of braid you put on the reel depends on the length of topshot you intend to use for that reel. I've heard the opinion about mono backing, but while the braid may last for 10 years, the mono backing will have to be replaced much sooner.

Hi Yakers:

It was my mistake but, 300 Yds 40 Lb Test is going for $25.00.
The knot was a double Uni which isn't that hard.
The bottom line is do it yourself to save Money :smt002

If you are just going to use it for rock fishing you will never hit the backing so should not need to peplace it as it only fills the space.
With that said the employee should have asked how much you wanted to put on or did you say just fill it up?

exactly, i put mono backing on my reel 4 years ago and just replaced my braid yesterday (put old braid on my new downrigger for some fresh 30lb braid) after reversing it once about 2 years ago.  I have never been down to my mono backing, even on that big sturgeon i caught last year. I run about 150yds-200yds of braid normally, enough to last quite a while after snags and re-tying of knots.

professional spooling is good though, as it lays the braid down more evenly so you don't have it digging into itself. but in my opinion the store employee should have mentioned mono backing the reel if we're talking about 340 yards! the back 200 yards of that line will possibly never be touched except if you choose to reverse it.
