I decided at the last minute to make a trip out to Lake Amador today.  Have been wanting to try it out for a while so today was as good as any.  Left home at 4:30 AM and arrived at Amador at 6:30 AM.  As expected the fees to get into the lake were a bit steep.  Fortunately, non-motorized boats only pay $2.00 instead of $8.00.  The total of all the fees ended up being $19.00, Lake Chabot ends up being some where around $15.00 with inspection fees calculated in.  The difference then is not that much.  After I unpacked and got my kayak situated, I was on the water at about 7:00 AM.

Setup one pole to troll a rapala j7 firetiger and the other to troll a 3" seps pro white grub, both on 4lb mono.  Trolled them without any weights for about an hour when I get hear a big splash behind my boat.  I look over and my rod is bent over and needless to say ... Fish On!  The fish comes in pretty easily and then it sees the boat and starts taking out line.  After a 5 minute fight, I finally get the fish up into my net.  It is a pretty large sized trout (22" when I get back to shore and measure it).

At this point I'm thinking that I might catch a few fish.  So with much anticipation I continue paddling and paddling and paddling, until 3:00 PM, with not so much as another bite.  It seemed to be a slow day all around.  There were quite a few people fishing off the bank but I didn't see many of them with any fish and the few I talked to also had no fish.

Regardless, it was a nice day to be out fishing and paddling.  The weather was slightly overcast in the morning and in the middle of the day it cleared a bit.  In fact it was much warmer than I expected it to be.  Pretty comfortable weather for kayaking.  I saw a couple other kayakers out there fishing but didn't get a chance to talk to them.

A few more pictures from my day.

View of the boat house and the dam from around the area where I finally subdued my fish.

Just a random picture taken in a cove.

Actually any trout over 16" is respectable, IMHO unless you live in Alaska.  :smt005 WTG Bink!!! I knew you were destined to greatness. I pretty much only fish Rapalas or Kastmasters. The J7 Firetiger is definitely one of my go to lures (thanks to PatR). Nice report AND pics.  :smt044

i personally like amador a lot for the quality of the fish, although the fishing has been too slow lately for me to spend the $18 bucks or so to launch there.

the one thing i really like is all of the trout have nice orange meat.

If you're only going to catch one fish, might as well make it a toad!  Nice fish!
