Sorry, I'm realizing my posts are prolific in this thread.  :smt053

don't worry Jay, I'm right there with you.  I just plain love knives of all sorts, and have since I got my first ka-bar at 9 or 10 years old.

Here are a few of my old favs. These blades are mostly retired now. The small ka-bar was my first knife ever. I also abused a USMC ka-bar as a youngster ( I got it because my older brother had one he found in a campground firepit & at the time I thought it was the knife to have)
The bowie on the far right was one of the best knives I've ever used. I got it as a kit knife at a gun show, totally unknown make.

The blades second pic are a couple of thoroughly beat bowies I used prior to getting a kukri last year. Obviously I can't resist a little sheath decor.

geez, the things you find to do when you are home sick...actually I had a fun time dusting off all these old blades.

OK, now we've covered my childhood knives, let's move on to the present. Besides the cheapie knife on my PFD and a leatherman in my tackle box, here are the blades I use today:

First pic L-R, Gerber folder , Buck bowie, and CRKT dogfish

Second pic, Kukri (this is the standard issue model, officer's knives have progressivly fancier hilts and smaller blades) This knife is basically a long hatchet, excellent for chopping & splitting firewood. I embellished the wooden hilt a little.

and lastly, if Sauron ever returns to middle earth I am ready to hunt some Orc!

For the middle earth geeks, the elvish inscription on the blade reads "Foe of Morgoth's Realm" :smt003

Nice!  :smt007

That old USMC design is a go-to working knife, just like Fishn-Jay said.

Very nice knives guys! If we weren't packing I would break out my knives and post some pictures too! off the top of my head I have a Ka-Bar, Buck Alpha Hunter, Benchmade folder, Forschner breaker, and several various fillet knives. :smt007  :smt006

I like that titanium dive knife mooch! I may have to add one of those to my collection.

Been enjoying reading this post. Real cool how the K Bar is in there so much cuz I was once in the USMC. Being that you'll be in Alaska a good survival type knife may be a good thing to carry and the K Bar blood well may help you get it back out of what ever your poking at quickly. Another knife I was interested in was the one Bear Grylls is always pounding on in his shows. Lot of good links to other knifes too here.

You gotta have one of these today's price only. http://www.rei.com/outlet/deal-of-the-day

Shouldn't this post be moved to Gearing Up? :smt012

Wish I could post pics. I just inherited a pile of ancient hunting knives from my friend who passed away before Xmas. He was 73 and some of them were his uncles and or dads. You could shave with everyone of them . Some with matching hatchets .

I like knives too. I'll post a pic of the pocket knife I cleaned a hog with later. I also just bought a Kershaw skinner.
Knives get dull with use. What do you guys prefer when it comes to sharpening them? I'm asking for both home and in the field. I use a diamond stick for my fillet knives and hooks.
BTW Mike, Joel filleting a fish? Ahh, I needed a funny visual. :smt005

My favorite hunting knife is a Kershaw Ken Onion signature knife.  Best blade I've ever owned.  Gutted, skinned, and boned out two hogs with it without needing to sharpen it.

Juan... for a quick and decent edge in the field or any time, get one of these http://www.hunterhoner.com/.

I use a diamond wet stone when I need to redo the edge, but I use the hone 90% of the time.

Love those kukri's.  If a guy were to buy one ... what are the recommendations on what to get?
