With 20 or 30 lb spectra, I bet I could easily get  1000 yards on my old Penn Jigmaster 500.  I'd just have to be careful not to get that thin line caught between the spool and the side plates.

My thoughts exactly.  My hunch is they're also in Submarine Canyon just 1/2 mile to 3 miles outside of Moss.

Does anybody want to try fishing for sea monsters?

I have big old reel that can probably reach down that deep

Then the question is, when are we going?

Maybe next Sunday or Monday (President's Day), if I can muster the courage to go :smt104

I just posted the question on Coastside to see if any boaters have snagged one there yet.  Seriously, if I find out that they're there then I might be easily convinced to go.

I would give it a shot. I have not paddled out of Moss yet so worst case I can chalk it up to a scouting mission.

You are probably right Ken but when I started chunking my squid jig around in the store people got upset. Though I did manage to land a nice 400# lady that though the jig was an actual squid!

Been  on 3 long range trips where we fished for squid (used for bait only).  If was good for Calamari.  We would have had it.

Cmon Ken, the squid at the store won't put up a good fight and get me out on the ocean either. Of course, I'll probably be saying the same thing as you  once I've done battle with a couple cow tuna using these things for bait.

OK Art,

Make sure you fill your Yak with Ice.  I not talking about a 7 lb bag.  More like 30 lbs.

I bet if you stuck that squid up a fat man's butt crack - you'd get a good fight (and a show)
