I was messing around out there with Melissa a couple of months ago and that old dock is done... Watch out for some rusty nails in the wood that's still there. But, yeah... you'll be launching of the rocks. Time to either rebuild or find another old dock to launch off of.

Sunday may be doable for me though. It'll be a game time decision though. If I can make it, I'll bring your goodies along.

Freddie

Ive had to launch from the rocks before, it's doable but sketchy. Theres always some good spots. I may bring a small roll of carpet to help the launch out

The rip rap can be some nasty stuff. I fell carrying my kayak up once and was lucky to still be wearing my pdf to pad the fall. I may make it out there if I can get my housework done in time.

I will probably make it out on Sunday as well.  As I have never fished for stripers or bass, can anyone give me any pointers as to what I might want to bring?  Also, I was thinking of going out Saturday as well, is whiskey slough or big break doable by a newbie?

whiskey is ez as long as the wind is down, its really just a long slough.  big break can get a little nasty outside in the San Joaquin when the wind kicks up, but is usually OK on the inside.

only problem with big break is on the inside on a low tide its approximately 2 feet deep all the way through except right down the channel.  if the wind is kicking up big from the northwest, it will throw breakers up into big break since the water level comes up so quick. i went out there once in october and it was an absolute mess coming in.

Hey Jeff,
The road you are launching off is Bacon Island Road and the dock is the old ferry dock where you used to catch the ferry accross to Mildred Island before it flooded in the early 80's. On the other side of thee river there used to be a Green House and we would catch a lot of quality stripers when it started falling down.
I fished that area almost every weekend in the mid 80's and early 90's and it was easy to catch 20-40 15lb stripers a day in the spring and fall. Wow talk about a blast from the past, there are still alot of good spots in Mildred and the surounding areas. If the weather is fair I'll try to join you on Sunday. I really miss that area.

Hey Yakhopper, were you landing them on lures or chovies back then?

Can't go wrong with watermelon Senkos with red and green flakes.

Shad pattern crankbaits or jerkbaits off rip-rap.

Trolling shallow Yozuris for stripers.

I have some secret baits for my spot I will share if you come  :smt003

Stinkytofu,
I have always been to impatient to use bait and never saw much excitement in watching it either. We used rattle traps and tubes mostly as well as a few secret lures.
Still get them on lures but the quality of fish seems to have gone down.
