New Melones Friday 2/19/10 - Slow Fishing

Had a business trip to Stockton last night so decided to head up to NM early and get 2 days of fishing in. Slept in and ended up launching at 830 AM to calm but overcast conditions. Caught a 12" trout after 20 minutes on a Rapala J7 brook Trout and was thinking things were looking good. Released the fish and headed to Carson Cove for crappie. Ran into Grumpy half way there and he said things were slow. Got to Carson Cove and switched to my crappies stuff and headed up the cove. Had a nice shore lunch with Molly. Then fished crappies with Grumpy for nada. Eventually was joined by Dilbeck and his buddies who were also not having much luck, even with secret agents. I was thinking if you can't catch a fish with "secret agents", I won't feel bad that my "go to" crappie jigs aren't working. Of course we are fishing in the middle of the day and most crappie guys fish at nightime.     Bagged another DFG special on a J7 Firetiger and let that fish go also. Headed out to check out Bostick Bar wich is now an island. Around 130 it started blowing like a mo fo so I aborted my plan to hit the spillway before dinner. On my death march paddle back to the ramp bucking 15 knot headwinds I notice a grey PB heading for me at full speed. I was thinking just another yahoo so I wave my paddle and the boat keeps on coming. I was thinking this was not good so I switched my VHF to 16 to call them off. At the last moment they veer off and pull up next to me and it turns out they were the police. I show them my license and the lady policewoman said Molly was cute.  I told them they scared the s**t out of me and they laughed.   Talked to Grumpy at the ramp and headed back to Angels Camp to get some sleep. Stopped at Angels Creek on the way to walk Molly and the water level is scary low. Pray for more rain. Life is good.
