This Standard Horizon HX750S got great reviews and I bought one recently.  I love it so far...and it's only $100!

not saying you have to spend a ton. get one that has good reviews even if you have to pay $20 more. You'll regret a purchase made to save a few bucks when your 'good deal' doesn't work OTW. I had a cobra and it totally failed. I now have a standard hroiz.

Man, I just paid 149 for the same one Sonny. I'll buy one more for backup. The
discount is just too good to pass up.

I really like my  5 watt Uniden Atlantis 250.  I think it paid $100 for it at Cabelas.
My favorite of all time was the Uniden Mystic.  That sucker was 5 watts, water proof and and had a GPS.
It lasted for 4 years of extremely heavy use. It wasn't cheap, I paid $400 but worth every penny.

What about finding one that floats. I'd hate to sink one! I have a bad habit of dropping stuff off the yak. Especially sunglasses!  :smt004

The HX750S does float!

The only 6W marine radio at price point. 6W allows you to talk farther and clearer than 5W VHF's. Drop it on a deck or drop it in the water, the HX750S is designed to take on the roughest of seas and keep you communicating all day with it's ergonomically shape and an die cast chassis.

Built-in thermometer, Volume & Squelch indicator on the display, SOS strobe light, Programmable Scan, Priority Scan, Dual Watch, NOAA Weather Alert and a speaker microphone jack allowing connection of optional accessories. Is the ONLY floating handheld on the market supplied with drop in cradle and both 110VAC and 12VDC chargers.
One hand operation
Water temperature sensor
SOS Strobe Light
Programmable channel names, Scan, Dual Watch and P-Scan
Large 1150mAh Li-Ion Battery
11-hour battery life (5/5/90 duty cycle)

Be sure to get some kind of float for watever radio you get.  If you get a floating radio but add a carabeaner(?) to lash it to something that added weight may sink it!  Connect an external float and be done with it!

The 750S is a great unit, much lighter than the HX600 unit I used to have.
