Perfect Linda Mar Conditions + 2-1/2 hours of soak time = 2 limits of dungies

Check out the small surf and two nice 7-1/2" crabs

Here's Mike checking out my catch...

Here's a close-up of my baited trap with a few crabs from the first soak.

Here's Mike pulling up his own trap.

Awesome job Chuck  :smt003 How do you paddle with all the those crabs in your seat? :smt005
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Wow, nice crabs! How deep/far from shore were you? i don't have a depth meter, so distance from the point or some other landmark would be appreciated.
I hope these swells hold through Saturday. I might sneak out in the morning for a soak!

Very carefully!  :smt087....  :smt112

I had traps at 35, 45, 50 feet.  All were productive for dungies as long as you were on a sandy bottom away from the rocks.  In other words...  about 400 yards, 1/8 mile, and 1/4 mile out from the beach.  For bait... I used salmon carcass and pheasant backs and necks.

Looks like you picked the perfect conditions - it's been a while since I've seen LM tame :smt004

Chuck, you have kayak crabbing down to a science, and I think I learned a little about it today.  I did manage to bring up a few nice crabs later in the day after you left.  It was fun.

Mike, it was great meeting you and Frank out there doing the same thing.  Thanks for the pictures you took and for letting me use your wheels.

Don't forget to check out this forum's hook-up and reports section more often.  Just because salmon and rockfishing in the ocean is winding down, that doesn't mean it's time to hang up your kayak.  Crabbing, river salmon, delta stripers, and bay sturgeon is just starting to heat up!

I tried for a little while near the wash rock in Shelter Cove, but just got a few nibbles using Bill's swimbait.  I think LM is basically fished out for this rockfish season.  The charter boats have been hammering that same spot all summer long.

keep those victory posts coming. I have crossed the mental line to wanting to try this now, (now my mind is focusing on all the stuff I don't know, which seems to be a lot).

How about those tiny little snare traps? I saw one at coastside #2. I only ever buy a couple crabs at a time, so maybe I only need to catch a few.
That might be an option for getting the feet wet on this one.

Hey Chuck I am still waiting for my invite to your house for crabs  :smt007

You rock man, I hope to get out there soon an pull some of those bad boys up. I need to put some rotten cotton on my traps and I should be good to go.

For the lowdown on kayak crabbing check out Chuck's excellent article:

Jason... it's a deal!  Thanks again for calling me yesterday morning and giving me the green light to launch at Linda Mar.

It's priceless to have locals like you, Skyboy, and Mike as our surf watchdogs.  Mike and I met a new kayak fisherman name Frank yesterday. From the water, you can see Frank's big living room window looking over Linda Mar.  How sweet is that!!!
